Thanks Archy for your offer but to get here on your bike you would wear your tyres out!! I'm from Worcestershire!! Cannot get electricians here who would be interested enough to do a small job!! and one quoted ÂŁ500.00!! just to wire up the shed with a light and twin socket, I have already put in the SWA. So I am left with no alternative but to do it myself, I am a qualified Electronic engineer so have the skills and tools to do the job. I don't comprehend the jargon used in your trade!! Just one point, it would be nice if these large DIY stores would sell cable by the metre.

Mike

TBH Mike what you are doing is notifiable work and if you are doing it correctly - through your Local authority building control i can't see that you will be saving much (if anything) on the the job.I think my Labc would charge you in the region of ÂŁ300!!! just for the privilege of you doing the work. :)

Interesting point pushrod, My conservatory was wired by the contractors (two spurs - power and lights) only weeks ago with no building control involvement! In the last 3 years I have other electrical work done by qualified electricians - with no building control involvement! - is this 'notifiable work' a new regulation?.

Oh I like the earth clamp thingy thanks malcolmsandford!

Mike -whereabouts in Worcestershire. I am not far. Not offering to take the job off you but if you get stuck PM (private message) me and I'll gladly have a look, if only for advice.

If your contractor / electrician is a member of a part P scheme (part P is is part of the building regs which are law since Jan 2005) then they will automatically notify the LABC on your behalf, which hopefully happened with your other work. The usual schemes are NAPIT, Niceic and ELECSA - you should see them on the side of electrical contractors vans. Not wishing to scaremonger but if DIY electrical work that was notifiable were to cause a fire it is very likely that house insurance would be invalidated. Also there could be a few problems with a house sale if local searches don't reveal correct notification of work. I know in this case you could just disconnect the circuit, but power to a shed is a selling point if you have the correct certificates for it.

Thanks SPARTVKUS, my location is St Peters, Worcester, and thanks for the 'safetynet' will PM if I get stuck.

Regards, Mike.

Just purchased a wiska combi box 308/5. The SWA gland screws in but the earth tag has to be fitted on the outside (no room inside) so how do I get the earth through to the terminal box inside? - solder wire to tag pass through box to the terminal block! (ip67) Mmmm

Mike, assuming you got what Malcolm suggested, it should all go together like this...

Edit: above's sounding a bit patronising (not meant!) or...

screw the gland tight on to the box with the banjo (earth tag) flush on the outside.
Drill through the banjo hole then use brass nut, bolt (head external) & washers to secure the earth on the inside, ring crimp best.

I'd agree with Archy's first method of using the wiska earthing plate.
The second option is fine for a metal box, but on plastic the bolted connection can become loose as the plastic "flows" over time.

Thanks, I agree the earthing plate is best, but where can I purchase this item? Most electrical suppliers have the wiska box but not the earthing plate!! strange-why (cost).

PS. located a supplier TLC. Cannot gain entry through the rear of this box (mounting clip) so will have to go through the side using a 2.5 TE gland.

Question - Wiska 20mm ports do you have to remove the seal membrane before fitting the SWA gland?

Hi Mike,

Not sure which box you got, I think this the best one... 30 Amp Wiska Junction Box 85 x 85 x 51mm - Grey IP66
Ask your suppliers about Pirahna nuts, the canines danglies. Piranha 20mm Earth Locking Nut

As for the rear entry, drill a 20mm through the back and solvent weld PVC pipe into it. Totally waterproof!
