Hmm, didn’t spot the “can’t turn off”.

Get a few off cuts of different sizes and compare them. As time goes on you’ll get to recognise the sizes.

benji, I put a simple and quite vague question and yet you seem to be able to judge me by that! I have got 10 years industrial experience from substations, wind turbines to working for the labour party doing electrics for conferences so don't don't just kick up and start slagging people of.
I understand that you can look at a cable and judge the size I was just bored trying to find info on the cable so thought I would try a quick post.
Too many people on here just slate anyone for asking a simple question that only needs a few simple ideas/suggestions which is usually what most people are happy to do!
Thank you to the people who are willing to put a normal response

Frosty even with respects to your annoyance at a post a response like that is likely to get you barred from the forum, you must remember this is a public forum and any issues you have with any post just P.M. one of the Moderators and they will deal with it s they see fit....

Benji... ive done this job 20yrs and occasionally il come across an old cable that can be deceptive regarding size due to the larger/thicker insulation and the O/P has said hes not able to switch power off so direct observation is limited.... i suggest that in future if thats your only input you can offer then keep it to yourself, i see no real reason to slate the O/P in this particular thread, il be interested to see your future constructive advice to see where your weaknesses are.

I did realise that darkwood just after I pressed the post button, I just don't understand why people like that even bother signing up to forums.
Thanks to yours and other peoples helpful responses

Hi frosty69 i hope my reply doesn,t put you off advancing your career, its probally me but i would have thought after 10yrs industrial you would have known about shaped cores on swa cables , ive also come across cables ie 70mm /95mm where the od has been the same and you have to double check/2nd oppinions and ive just finished 50yrs, lot easier now days with size shown on outer insulation. But i was not slagging you off,

Thats ok Benji just me being a bit mardy about your response to be honest! I do know to judge sizes etc was just bored at work and wanted to know any ways of guarenteeing the size whilst live.

Do you have access to the installation drawings? They always seem to get lost on a lot of sites but a god send if you can find them. Happy hunting.
