Swa in plastic board?

What's your guys view about Swa into plastic consumer unit

Well plastic boxes are evil and all readily combust so surely the SWA will just act like a fuse to strat the fire (mission impossible music...)

Of course it can be done as long as it doesn't distort the DB etc. you would obviously have to use a fly lead to the banjo or earthing nut to earth the SWA. You just have to use common sense for example a 2.5 3core SWA is hardly going to be a problem when being glanded in to a plastic DB.

Use either a metal conduit box or metal adaptable box.

When I worked on a couple of Thames Water treatment sites, all the connections made to the pumps/switches/accessories flexes etc the swa's were made off into pvc adaptable boxes for the obvious reason's.

Yes but they are generally made from plastic that is suitable for the applications and are more robust.

She strange replies here!.... Leesparks nailed it with his post, nothing wrong with terminating through plastic as long as its rigid enough to support the termination without distortion, boards with flimsy or slide in walls would be a no no!Also the swa must be secure so it cannot be easily moved about which could weaken or crack any plastic termination point.

I do find this to be a very basic level question tbh where common sense should prevail, is there any particular reason for this question?

And there was me thinking that a cables support was to be provided by it's installations fixings, not the termination gland.

So long as the SWA gland is secure and cable adequately supported by it's fixings, there's no reason why a SWA can't be directly connected to a plastic enclosure be it PVC adaptable box or a plastic CU. So long as securing the gland to the plastic enclosure doesn't distort the plastic (and i don't mean the gland/cable pulling on the plastic surface) then all is fine, the flying earth lead will take care of the SWA armouring connection....


Any problems with a CU/DB's plastic enclosure, then use a metal or suitable plastic adaptable box connected to the enclosure to terminate the SWA cable and take the tails through !!

There ain't no reason why a lot of things can't be done, but know matter who posts what, there always a twist and a dig.

Makes me wonder who as exactly done what on the tools over the years ? I know I've been on the tools for 30 years and seen a fair few different things and wouldn't have it any other way. I'm sure people lose touch or have never been touch no matter how intelligent they sound in text

Can only echo what's been said already. Use some common sense! If the plastic is fairly sturdy and the cable is supported in such a way that the gland can't be moved/twisted (which it should be) then I can't see a problem. And if in doubt, or just to be on the safe side, terminate it through a metal adaptable box

It is often advisable to sandwich the banjo between two locknuts inside the enclosure to mitigate against issues of plastic creeping with an adverse effect on the earthing of the armour.
