I'm just wondering if anyone knows of a product that can switch between 8kw loads?

The customer I have (a Deli) wants to add a 8kw pizza oven but only has a single phase supply and is already at capacity at 80 amps.

He has a industrial size oven and chicken rotisserie which totals around 8kw which is used during the day and the pizza oven would be used at night. I want a product that would switch between the 2 modes (day and night) and not able to all be turned on at once.

An 80A change over switch will be quite hefty so you may be better off using contactors with auxiliary contacts so only one supply can be used.

For dedicated switching between two 8kW appliances, the OP could go 40A CPD to a 40A changeover switch, which will probably be smaller and cheaper. I read this as the one 8kW appliance (be it day or night appliance) plus "everything else" takes the load up to around 80A

What about commando plugs and 1 socket? Simple cheap and failsafe, but only practical if the 2 bits of kit are close to each other I guess

Good luck with that. Make sure you detail the cert. Pretty likely after you've done they'll find a way to run both together with a nail in the fuse to stop it blowing.

That's very restrictive - sooner or later they will want to use the pizza oven during the day, encouraging a botch.

The IEC60309 idea could work, however as the load is just north of 32A, you would have to use the much larger 63A variants, which aren't the easiest to couple and uncouple for the layman. Personally I wouldn't be comfortable with someone potentially struggling with connectors in a food prep area with hot equipment closeby.

Either a 40A changeover switch or 3xIEC60309 connectors, plus cabling, assembly and testing will probably be in the region of £200.

It really is very simple. A changeover switch is the best thing for the job. Will look neat, professional and is readily available.

I am sure this is a non-issue but usually changeover switches have two supply terminals and one load terminal. In this setup there is one supply and two loads. It may be worth checking technical sheets to ensure they will work as required. As I said I am pretty certain it will be fine but will be worth a check.

many moons ago there was a thread about someone having 2 showers but wanted a changeover switch for them so they both can't come on at the same time. Someone posted one.
You could use something similar. Switching high loads.
