Discuss Table lamp to ceiling lamp, is that possible? in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

Basically, you just want a cylindrical lamp shade dangling from the ceiling?!?

Just go out and buy a lamp pendant, attach to ceiling, attach your lamp shade to lamp holder and insert lamp.

Turn power back on, operate light switch and Voila! :)

Even if the bulb is the same?

basic law of physics. heat rises. therefore the heat that rises from the bulb away from it's holder as a table lamp will , on the ceiling, rise into the lamp holder and may cause overheating.

lamp shades are soooo 70's get one of these and drill an appropriate sizes hole in the bottom.

you could use it as a ceiling light in australia, coz. it'd still be the right way up.

I would like to do that because I did not find a nice ceiling lamp for my bedroom, similar to the bedside table lamp, that's why I thought to convert a table lamp to ceiling one, to have them similar.

By the way, this is the table lamp I would like to put on the ceiling GAVIK Table lamp - blue/frosted glass - IKEA , of course without the top cover, just the body.

Stop being so bloody tight and buy a new table lamp then aswell if you can't find anything that matches. I thought i was tight with my money.

Come on mate, that idea is ridiculous. There are specialist lighting wholesalers around you know aswell as the regular diy and wholsaler shops - i cannot believe you can't find a ceiling light suitable anywhere.

Forget the idea of hanging a table lamp upside down...im actually laughing typing that, i can't believe what i've just read. Sorry to be blunt/harsh/a tad nasty OP but its a stupid idea and i can't believe ive read that. (although its EF so maybe i can)

I don't see what the problem is. Ages ago the bulb in my front room went and I didn't have another, so I converted it to an uplight. Works perfectly well. (see note underneath)

(Note: seriously, do not try to convert a table lamp to a pendant light, it is a recipe for disaster for the reasons other posters have said. DO NOT try it!)
