Hi guys,
I have job on to install a consumer unit, the problem is I'm unsure weather to supply the consumer unit with meter tails or an armoured.
the setup is the meters are outside on the garage wall and the consumer unit is on the other side of the garage fed in 10mm tails currently. The distance from the meter to the CU is abou 5 metres max.
Im going to put a 80amp switch fuse in the garage back to back with the meter, but I'm unsure on what would be best to supply the CU in.
i was either thinking maybe using trunking across garage joists enclosing 25mm tails or would armoured be more suited. The customer is using there own CU which ain't metalclad and the gap to fit the board wouldn't allow an adapt box to be fitted aswell.
so all I'm asking is would the meter tails in trunking be the best method or should I look for an alternative.
any suggestions from experience appreciated.

I guess you mean supplying!

16mm tails will be fine after the switch fuse mate. 25mm unnecessary.

While I have your attention what are your views on installing meter tails in a cavity up to 1st floor level and the through a couple of joists down to the position of a consumer unit. is there a specific regulation against running meter tails through a joist and up a cavity.

hum... Can you guarantee that they won't bridge the gap. I wouldn't do it

I pulled some new tails in once, rarely do it to be honest, but the house was empty and I fancied updating them as they were not long enough and were knackered on the ends.. Anyway, it was literally less than a meter up the wall probably in the cavity, is crimped old to new and pulled them through.

The NIC bloke looked at this as one of my jobs and he had a total hissy fit that I dared do it, it was a like for like replacement, I didnt make it any worse.

How many forums have you asked this question on so far?

You can't replace crap with crap and expect it to be ok. If I replace all the down lights in a house which have exposed terminals with brand new down lights with exposed terminals it ain't right is it?
