Hi guys,
I have job on to install a consumer unit, the problem is I'm unsure weather to supply the consumer unit with meter tails or an armoured.
the setup is the meters are outside on the garage wall and the consumer unit is on the other side of the garage fed in 10mm tails currently. The distance from the meter to the CU is abou 5 metres max.
Im going to put a 80amp switch fuse in the garage back to back with the meter, but I'm unsure on what would be best to supply the CU in.
i was either thinking maybe using trunking across garage joists enclosing 25mm tails or would armoured be more suited. The customer is using there own CU which ain't metalclad and the gap to fit the board wouldn't allow an adapt box to be fitted aswell.
so all I'm asking is would the meter tails in trunking be the best method or should I look for an alternative.
any suggestions from experience appreciated.

What is this hysteria about tails in a cavity,my goodness, if they needed changing would some of you butcher a wall to chase them, surface trunking them or even sling in some surface mounted swa?

If so it seems that a reality check is on the cards if you think the remote possibility of a cavity bridge is better considered than doing what has been a standard tails installation method for eons

You may have a point. Could be one of those things people are just told with no substance. Does anyone actually have a reg for this?

There is no prohibition in BS7671 against running cables in the cavity.
In fact BS7671 specifically allows building voids to be used.
However the DNOs do not like it, as they believe there is the possibility of damage caused by debris falling inside the cavity.

Many of the circumstances of using the cavity i've seen, were actually instances where the DNO's (or should i say the old Regional Electricity Boards) had used the cavity. These mainly on overhead supply systems where they had actually requested a pull wire/cord to be installed by the builders, on new builds of the time.

Isn't the trend now for most cavities to be filled with insulation of one kind or another, so that the only thing that can call onto the cables is bits of lightweight insulation?
