Taking the full time plunge!!

Hi guys,

well im finally doing it, taking the plunge from full time employment to full time self employment.

ive got a bit of work coming in now but just wondered if anyone knew of any places I can tender or find more work in the Midlands area.

can't help with that. just go for some advertising. cards in paper shop boards etc. and good luck with it.

As im like you still pritty new to Self Employed,

Far as i see it, most of the work will be word of Mouth, Facebook moden Yellow Pages.
People only look for Electricians when they need them and if someone i know said they are Good People (after watching all them Cowboy Traders show) i would go more on word of mouth (even tho that dosnt seem 100%) than some Glossy Photos

Housing, Letting Agencys will need places tested every time a new person rents. People with Properties will also want some work done now and then, good place to leave a Card, Dress up as a Chicken and Walk in to these places, and in a Clear Voice, "I am reasonably Price and will do a Dam Chuffing Good Job" if you could have a wagging tail feathers as well, it will stick in their memories for a LONG time.

I never see people having Business Cards in SHOPS any more (not sure if thats the agressive part of the trade, seen a few people having pop shots at peoples work, and i wouldnt be shocked if another company just took all the cards from a shop if you left it there)

Could get your qualfications Tatooed on your body, COMMITED and TRAINED.

subby yourself out to some agencies, you will get plenty of work while you try to build your client base up

It could take 2 - 3 to build up your client base and much of this will be though word of mouth.... so make commitments to clients and keep them........... turn up late, do a poor job, try and rip people off - you won't get recommended.

I'm in a very similar situation. I work shifts, 4 on 4 off and work for myself on the 4 off. Currently very busy but worried about taking the plunge and keeping the flow of work to pay the bills.

Good luck, it's something I'm also contemplating doing, I know a lot of people use Facebook to advertise now.
Just a quick question though, if you set up on your own, and then use an agency to get work say on a commercial install, would you need a higher PL insurance than if you just set up as a domestic electrician?

Some insurance companies will draw a distinction between polyphase work and single phase work so it is worth checking. Also check the terminology they use. Mine got confused between three phase and HV and tried to charge me the earth. Some local authorities and other organisations may require a higher amount of cover than standard ( say £5M instead of £2M for example ). Best of luck.

Hi guys,

Firstly let me say thank you for the well wishes. Ive done my first day as self employed and must say its been great.

2 jobs completed today, 2 to do tomorrow and a CU change on Wednesday. Off to Liverpool Thurs& Friday (Anniversary )

I feel on top of the world at present and I would say to anyone thinking of taking the leap - GO FOR IT!!

you can only make it work if you are 100% commited
