Your answering a question with a question....I am not everyone else is at it attitude more they were told the cirumstances on more than a few occasions I got the brush of after many phone calls at premium rate calls. I was willing to pay the money back at the time but they never got it sorted they just left it and took it off what they should have being paying me.

Anybody had any dealings with tax credits got payed £9000 by mistake 7 years ago informed them of this got normal reply dont worry bout it it will get sorted so for last 7 years being paying it of with credits I should receive £10 odd pound a week. This year with the wife doing a extra shifts and me doing alot of overtime gone over the allowed amount so letter drops on mat you owe us £5000 pay in one go or pay over 12 months. I have heard after 7 years it gets wiped is this true??? Also I have read on website that if you informed them within 30 days that it was wrong and there fault which it was (have letter from them stating this) it may get wiped or part of of it wiped ...

Been in the same boat for last 5 years haven't had a penny off them since they changed the rules + added my company car ( which I already pay tax on ) on to my wages which meant I then earned too much to be due anything !!!

Got a letter last august wanting £900 by september cos we were late in renewing our claim so they took us out of the system. Only way to stop them was to get put back in the system but still get nothing!!!

Got a letter last week saying they were taking us out of the system AGAIN!! but that we FINALLY owe them nothing.

Sad thing is I dont believe them + wouldn't be surprised if they come looking for money they think we owe.

Best advice I can give is always keep a record of any contact you have with cos the haven't got a bloody clue!!!

if you pay it back and have proof,they cant take anymore off you,and you can claim what you are entitled to..

It does not work like that believe me tax credits are a real pain in the --- they could not sort out a p*** up in a brewery. I have had loads of coversations with them about sorting this out before if you knew the half of it you would realise where my problem with them is.....Endless converstions , being put on hold for 20 mins.... waiting for them answer the phone for upto a half a hour to 45 mins.....

no you havent,you got what wasnt yours,youve stuck into savings,they want it back and your asking how to avoid paying it back,just pay it back,and waiting 20 mins on the phone is no excuse man,thats the problem in this country,people moan about immigrants coming over and taking our benefits while doing exactly the same.

If you have reported it at the time and they still made the mistake its there fault happened to my mrs and I. She had phoned them to tell them about overpayment of over a thousand pounds, as she went from sick payments from employer to Incapacity benefit and the guy from tax credits told her she was still entitled for 28 week more so she took his name in case
then they tried to claim it back and so she informed them that she had notified them at the time and gave his name
and as she had informed them they admitted it was there mistake and cancelled the overpayment claim

You are possibly right but when you have tried paying it back many times you give up trying your views are yours mine are mine. Right or wrong I am sure you have done things that are not right or incorrect, sorry if I am misjudging you and you are a angel and never done anything wrong but..

We were overpaid, but instead of paying them back, they just took it off what we would actually get.

You should claim what is yours its not a handout its what you are entitled to...Thats your choice. I got paid wrong not my fault. I told the tax credits what was happening they made a mistake.....If the system was correct mistakes would not happen. But it has and I will deal with it as I feel it should be dealt with will they spend 40 mins waiting for me answer the phone No will they pay premium rate waiting No will they tell me I am right I owe them money time after time maybe yes now but at the time No

sometimes i give up..i really do..people like you bang on about how people should do this or that to make it a better place,while doing the opposite..boils my **** man..so your saying you got paid 9 grand by mistake and because they dont answer the phone in 1 ring its yours,no questions asked..you kernt..

No Offence Alarm man but from my understanding CRAGS has been paying his overpayment off with deductions and he has now been penalised for trying to replace this income with him and his wife working harder - to be told he should pay a big one off payment immediately. There seems to be no leniancy with this goverment!

Anyone with young children will testify that they are struggling to pay there bills and the tax credits help enormously. In an ideal world we would not have to give up so much of our hard earned cash while paying through the nose for the most basic esentials we all need. I strongly agree that hand outs. and newly arived imigrants (not to mention all the greedy ** in the banks & goverment & those rich **** who make there money out of this country but are unwilling to pay there share of tax) is totally unjust. If they got this lot sorted we would not even need these tax credit schemes, we'd be able to have the incentive to work our knackers off, knowing it was worth it for our families!
The conservative's have never given a ---- for the average working family - they don't connect or understand with the normal guy on the street. (there all the same - so this is not a political statement!!)

I believe that CRAGS is just a normal guy, who is working his arse off and trying to live his life honestly, only to be screwed over by the incompetance of the system we have to live with.

With respect he was looking for members personnal advise ( this has effected some and seems to be more common than first seemed) , NOT A LECTURE - saying that he should have spent half his life expaining to these useless ****** that he was right all along!!!!

More threads like this should be welcomed as real family life issues effect us all (unless your lucky and only 21!!)
