Reading another thread got me thinking about the terminology we use such as making off, glanding off etc. but how many of the younger sparks know what "belling out" means?

Getting back to the cable rollers, we used to refer to them as "blokes" so if three or four people were struggling to pull a cable in, the expression "we need another bloke up there on that corner or half way along there" would be said. If there was no other help we would tie a cable roller or "bloke" in the position required and it would ease the installation of the cables. We used to have half a dozen in the shed which would come in very handy with really long and awkward cable pulls. Then 3 or 4 men could pull a cable in which could easily of required 6 men lol

One of the first things to do as an apprentice was to make a small wooden box with a bell and 4½V flat battery in with a couple of wires sticking out, later added a small indicator lamp as it could get noisy in some parts of the foundry.
When I came out of my time I had to make a another box, this time with a sliding lid to protect the analogue meter ceremoniously presented to me by the chargehand!
