Years ago I used to use a plug top with holes just big enough to accept the probes drilled directly above the plug top terminations, therefore no chance of any potential live parts exposed if inadvertantley left plugged in and reenergised. Also good for proving dead.

Also if you drill the hole above the "live fused" connection you then have a 3amp 1362 fuse so improving safety whilst testing.

Who needs a 30mA RCD when you can have a 3A fuse to protect you? :)

I have a socket like this [ElectriciansForums.net] Testing Tips which is shorted out between earth and live inside, i use it to null my socket lead [ElectriciansForums.net] Testing Tipson my tester then use it instead of using an R1+R2 adapter for my probe leads

well, the 3A fuse would protect against putting a s/c across while circuit is energised. a step up from 2 terminal drivers wedged into the socket with croc clips attached. ( oops, that's given away a secret)

You'd be dead long before a 3A fuse blew :)

What the hell are you on about?

I'm testing ring continuity
I've disconnected the lives, neutrals and earths from the board
I've connected 2 x lives to their opposing earths
I've now gone to a socket that I believe is on the ring that I am testing
I install my plug top with the 3.00mm holes in the plug top lid.
I now set my continuity tester on voltage and test between live and neutral and live and earth to verify that the socket is DEAD!, being protected by not only the fuse in the tester but also by the 3 amp fuse in the plug top.
If proven dead I now carry out the continuity test.

Where the #### does the live supply, the RCD or a 6 amp fuse come into the equation.

Right then...
You said that a 3A fuse would give you protection. My point was that without an RCD you would be dead before a 3A fuse blew. Obviously I have completely misread your post and for that I apologise.
As for the phrase "what the hell are you on about?". Well, I find that extremely insulting.
I will now step out of this thread. Good day to you.

By the time you've gone though all this, you'd be better doing it properly.

As long as any shorting leads are pre-nulled there shouldn't be a problem.

Do be careful with the adapters you make up though. A few years ago an electrician was using a self made plug which had everything connected across within it, which he used to speed up his R1&R2 and R1&Rn tests. This resulted in a line/cpc reverse not being identified and a near fatal shock being received to a tenant.
