The only time I’ve cut myself with a knife it wasn’t mine and it was blunt.

Out of interest RoB, did the college provide a stone so you could put an edge on a blade?
blunt blade, no problem

left to right, coarse dmt, 1/3k and a 4/8k

We weren't allowed them 25 yrs ago either ... the irony of my post here is for the first time in my career I left my blade out in my toolbox .... searching for a driver I slashed my thumb open but that could have happened on any knife....my excuse old age!!!!

Sharpening a blade, and knowing a blunt one can be more dangerous, was one of the first things i ever learnt.

My DMT hone stays with me in the key bag,and i ALWAYS have a small Spyderco folder, constructed to align with Legal Carry legislation.

I have an orange one for work,a black for best...

I have a beautiful Buck locker,with hardwood side-pieces,4mm spine and S/L bearings,all in a leather belt mount...

Had to retire it in a drawer due to varying work environments causing "good reason" dilemma...curse this nanny-state:icon12:

im happy with that cause i have decent gear (going to grab a voltage indicator soon, i dont use one but useful for test)

i would like my own because then i can sharpen it to the point i can shave with it

I doubt I would shave with a voltage indicator. I'm not so sure I would sharpen it either.

got my am2 next month and your not allowed stanley knifes?

what fixed knife do you guys use? i have tried a haupa from the wholesalers and there terrible

This is something I can’t get my head around.

In your day to day work you get comfortable with the tools you use. Come a practical examination, they give you a kit of blunt and worn out junk and expect you to work safely.

Are those water stones shanky? used to have the Norton set but it was a pain having to reflatten it every time, just stick to the Diamond stones now
yes there waterstones.

the dmt is around 300grit if i recall correctly

the naniwa is a 1000/3000 grit combinationstome
the norton is a 4000/8000 grit combination stone.

ill need to pick up a 10,000 grit finishing stone at some point (i buy razors from time to time off ebay)

I used to finish my plane blades and chisels off on a leather strop with jewellers rouge after the 8k Norton, permanently had a bald spot on the inside of my forearm where i used to check them by shaving my arm!

Only do rough joinery now so just a quick hone on the DMT ultra fine is more than enough

thumb nail test is better, lick your nail then GENTLY run the blade over it, it should stick along its full length.

a Chinese 10k is cheap rather than using paste

What do you think lol!!

The only time I've cut myself is putting a knife in my pocket without retracting the blade. Only made that mistake once!

Take one of these knives to the assessment. Granted, it is not the best for cables, but at the end you can point it at the assessor and he will definitely pass you!!
