Because the codes used to be dots, then they changed to vertical straight lines, then sloping lines, then sloping the other way, it all got a bit messed up.
For instance the code for 1966 is IIII IIII

that's what confuses me. the zippo has 2000 on it's base but also XVI.and i do know roman numerals. was taught latin at school.
