I have been asked to look at a consumer unit which is sometimes reading 310V on a meter as read by a plumber who was working on the boiler.

I am going to measure with something better than a multimeter to see what readings are there, but I believe sometimes it does read correctly at 230V.

Thoughts please,

well first i wouldn't believe a plumber if he said "it'll be dark before morning". tea time usually results in a drop in supply voltage if anything, due to the increased load.

Hi there,
I had a similar thing last year, lamps blowing ect, tested volts at a socket and got a
300 plus reading, found nuetrol cable burning on dead side of isolator insibe the cu.

I have been to the customers house tonight and got back a short while ago. I did find that the neutral was loose at the incoming side before the meter, not overly loose, but a good 4 to 5 turns on the screw driver.
I went through all the split board and checked for anything that could have been loose. Seems good, just the incoming terminals loose.
She then went on to show me the socket that always trips in her utility room and the shower that always trips. Guess what they did not perform this time haha!

Her spilt board has on the rcd side, two ring circuits, down stairs lights, hmm, and the shower at 45A.

Lights normally not in rcd side right?
Shower correct?

Good thinking - the other side of that is my garage and also where the gas comes in so probably quite a tidy solution if it comes to it!
