O

OhmSweetOhm

Getting a lack of experience in my apprenticeship due to my company becoming more of a lacky company doing whatever they're asked of no matter what it is rather than being an electrical company.
This is worrying me a great deal as my AM2 is coming up in July and a lot of the things I've learnt has just been forgotten.
So I've made this thread to ask you guys any questions that pop into my head that I'm unsure about. So firstly...

2 way switching:
Do you bring a twin and earth in from the board to the light fitting.
Take a 3 core and earth away from the light fitting to the first switch (Brown-C, Black-L1, Grey-L2)
Then take a 3 core and earth from switch one to switch two?

How do you do two way switching by bringing the feed to the first switch?

Thanks.

use both colurs in the switch wire. i tend to put brown with black in L1 and blue with grey in L2. all sleeved in red ( i mean brown )

The AM2 is done in singles. So from the board, you need take a neutral from the consumer unit to the light, an line from the consumer unit to C of the first switch, L1 and L2 of both switches link up, and from the C terminal to the light, obviously taking an earth from the consumer unit to each switch and light.

Have you ever done SY cable, SWA, Heatings, testing faultfinding? If you haven't you arn't ready for the AM2 talk to your boss about it and he'll hopfully sort things out for yiou

if you were going to take neutral to switch first, would you just put in connector block, or do you get a switch plate with terminal for neutral..???? and for all the posts before on op, what do you need 3c for, never heard of single core and earth t&e. just saying

Not true for me mate. My ring final circuit was singles, lighting was in PVC.

Agreed on your point though. If you don't know these things your not really ready to do your AM2.

Back again with another question lads, apologies...

Was looking in the On Site Guide last night and noticed on the IR test page, it said when performing the test, the main breaker should be open and MCBs closed. However, when you look at the diagram it says underneath that all breakers should be open. Which is it?

Thanks.

Your so not ready. I do each circuit at a time disconnecting each end and if theres control gear on the circuit i link together live and earth and test between them to neutral at 250v. if there isnt then from each end of the cable at the consumer unit l-e l-n e-n at 500v and if theres a two way switch test in every possible way to check each strapper. and all switches should be on.

to be honest if your due to take your am2 then you are at the end of your apprentiship which makes learning how to wire a two way switch a bit late in the day, you cant really be blaming your employer youve had plenty time to learn these basic concepts?

I do know how to wire a two way switch? Plus it's a 2 way and intermediate switch in the exam anyway which I also know how to do. My exams tomorrow, think I'm just getting last minute nerves. I've done next to no testing so I'm slightly worried about that but I know in my head how to do it. It's just putting it into practice is all I'm concerned about.

well stop panicking then you big girls blouse,
take a deep breath and think carefully about what youre doing for each test go slow and methodical and it should all fall into place an exception will be made for exam nerves but not incompitence always remember safety first.

An insulation resistance test is a dead test so something has to be open :)

It is quite possible to test all the circuits together as long as there is no vulnerable equipment on them eg an rcbo - makes it much quicker. However if there is a value below 2 meg you would have to investigate the circuits individually. If this is after the event hope it went well - nerves can be a bit of a killer. Hope they didn't get the better of you.
