Whats everyones views on other trades rate? Must say it annoys me a little the fact we seem to be on the same par as plasterers, painters and tilers now. No disrespect but these trades are not as technically skilled as electricians so why is this not reflected in the rate? We have to pay and study for courses and liable if someones house burns down but other trades not subjected to this are paid the same or not more? Ive heard electricians were always the best paid years ago so whats changed? I cant see the justification, sorry rant over but would welcome peoples views

2391 is a tough exam, however anyone with a mind to study can pass it, most wonder course guys dont pass but its not a requirement so why bother - most schemes dont even require 2382 untill 12 months after first registration. I started later in life but followed the full route upto jib approved, 2391 etc but only really work in domestic due to no real hands on training on larger works and now the domestic side is crippled with one week wonders, which incidentally is the reason i retrained from a time served plasterer as the trade was being crippled with short course guys.
I give up.

Don't give up! Because for all the short course and 5 day wonder talk I hear we miss the point that people have mouths to feed and this recession has been with us since, I think, late 2007 early 2008. Therefore people are entitled to look for a good living for their families. I work in the automotive industry and from plenty of ongoing projects (and overtime and bonus!!!!) my job has gone drastically down in the earning stakes. But I,m grateful to have a job and do whatever is required of me.

I am trying to validate skills and will be sending my JIB application tomorrow. I have just received approval for IEng last week and completed 2382-10 2 weeks ago. Its not about looking at the other trades skills and what their earning its about positioning yourself for the future and even at 40 I see the future!!! In the next two years a lot of people will exit the domestic market as they can't make ends meet and then ,hopefully, market will correct itself.

Regards

it is a bit annoying to think that if we **** up, someone could get electrocuted, or a house could burn down and a family killed with the electrician facing charges. A tiller ****s up and a tile falls of a wall, not the end of the world.

I agree, but I think generally within the domestic market people don't look at the level of responsibility a sparky has, its taken for granted, but the price thats charged and unfortunately the visual impact of the jobs we complete. I wonder how many people would pay good money for putting up and wiring in that nice chandelier or spots but would baulk at the price for bonding upgrade or new consumer unit.

Regards
