Evening all,

Think its time I got me a young apprentice. Working alone is hard and long, wouldn't mind having some company and help to carry tools, and teach someone a skill which will help them in life.

What are the requirements when employing apprentice?

whats the standard wage, do I need extra insurance, and what happens with taxes?

and how do I go about finding one

thanks

yeah...well choose wisely wont you...
dont get anyone like the little tw&t that we have will you....
who disappeares of site without informing anyone, attempts pullups 2 lifts up on scaffolding and spend half an hour at a time distracting other trades...
all of which he did last week...

Check the government website for wages, for the minimum wage...

ÂŁ110 a week is about the going rate...

It depends. Its ÂŁ2.30 or ÂŁ2.60 an hour i think for minimum wage

Check the goverment website for exact figures.

Contact companies like jtl as they will sought out the college side of things for you, might make things a little easier

Is there not any Government grants you can claim for a small business, towards the cost of employing an apprentice?? Small businesses need all the help they can get these days. I'd be doing a good bit of research into the whole affair if i was you. As well as finding a suitable candidate in terms of being hard working and progressive, you need to get on together if you're going to be working together every day!!

There sure is...

Either ÂŁ1000 or ÂŁ1500 can't quite remember but it is on the site I posted.

Contact a local training provider or college. Do a search in your area for a Group Training Association (GTA), they will give you all the info you need, will probably have a list of youngsters wanting apprenticeships, and they will do all the paperwork etc for you, as well as sorting out the appropriate qualifications and registrations for you / and him or her. In a nutshell the training provider will do everything for both of you, so you can concentrate on running your business, and teaching him on the job. You have missed college enrolment for this year, but if he does a 4 year extended diploma it takes 4 years, so he can go next year, and use this year towards his NVQ3.

Cheers.........Howard
