Having just done the 17th edition in January I am in no hurry to sit through the torture all over again to do the 18th, a friend of mine has mentioned on his assessment he has told up to two years before he has to get the 18th as long as he works to the new regulations from January 2019 can any one confirm this? I was planning on doing the update coarse in December but would rather leave it until later next year if possible.

Get it done whilst it's fresh in your head. Only difference is a few more questions on the 18th have been added, the exam is exactly the same.

Suppose it would depend on if you are a sole trader, or work as an employee for a company.

All electrical installations designed after 31st December 18 must be 18th edition compliant. Guess a sole trader would have to demonstrate a level of understanding and awareness of the changes (Stroma), simple way to do that would be with a 18th quali.
