Hi all.
I’ve recently completed my apprenticeship, AM2 and 18th edition.
The goal over the next few years is to work towards various other qualifications and set up on my own, leaning more towards the domestic installation side of things.

Im looking to prioritise any courses/qualifications that are compulsory for self employment in this trade so I can get them done first, and worry about the not so important extras later on.

Is anybody able to advise or point me in the direction of which qualifications are a must please.
Also, I’ve had many people tell me 2391 is compulsory, but I’ve had others tell me it’s not for various reasons. Could anyone clear that up for me please?

Many thanks in advance

2391 is not mandatory.useful if yo want to get into employment and/ ot testing self employed. with the quals you have, i'd be looking moreinto industrial works. that's where the money is. house bashing is a race to the bottom. cheapest quote gets the work. OK fo busy but skint sparks.

Hi,i too would recommend the 2391,as it is a leg-up on the start of a fault finding career, which will be more rewarding, whatever field of electrics you follow.

As for going self-employed,on domestic......i would contact Astrazeneca in regard of obtaining a vaccine which protects your sense of humour ?

You may be ok without the 2391,but you really need the other ?

My advice for anyone young/just coming out of their time would be do 5-10 years for someone else. Looking back all my major cockups which you can chalk down as experience were whilst I was on the books and not ones I would want to be ironing out as the main man with the customer. Might be a funny way of looking at it but I'm glad I learnt and got experience underneath someone else as I think it made me a better electrician as a result. And when I look back at my 15 years in the trade I would like to think I'm much better at it now than when I came out of my time, always learning and always trying to get better hopefully. Fair enough if you want to jump straight in at the deep end but that's just my experience for what it's worth. Good luck whichever route you go down

There's more money in housebashing then in industrial surely? Unless it's your contract you're just getting an hourly on an industrial site no? The seasoned lads at work are always complaining about how crap cards in wages are nowadays.

One reckons he was on £350 a day in 1998 and now he's on £20 an hour. If you get the right customers housebashing you can clear £50k a year easily.
