TNS or TNCS supply?

S

Hi all, please see attached? TNS or TNCS supply? Looks like it could be a TNCS but no notice to say that it is? IMG-20130805-00186.jpg

Have not got or ever used one of these testers I have a Metrel but when taking PSC it still needs earth connection and the meter calcs just Land N to give result I am assuming D-LOG is the same, you may be testing it this way already but thought I would post this .

Why don't you connect your neutral and earth leads together on the neutral and take a reading then do the same on the earth. That will give you the PSC/PFC of both the neutral and the earth seperately then.

I have just tried this on my own house which I know is TNCS. Whilst my tester lets me switch between PFC/PSC when I press the F1 key it will not let me take just the PSC on its own. It requires a Line, Neutral and Earth connection before it will take a reading...

Reading page 18, you must be able to. Reads like you need LNE leads connected and perform two tests, using F1 to toggle between them.

Many thanks to all the helpful people out there. No where in the manual does it say to join the N and E leads together but I have and these are the results I eventually got for my house which I know is TNCS. PSC between line and earth 0.28 ohms and 0.891ka. PSC between line and neutral 0.29 ohms and 0.861ka. So, many thanks. That seems to all make sense.

However, the di-log leads are not at all easy to connect together! First result came up on screen FUSE and secondly the results did fluctuate. It was only on the third test that I got these results. Got reading's fluctuating between 0.32 ohms and 0.17 ohms so not necessarily all that easy to interpret results....

I was guided by The NECIEC on this one

I'm sure if I had the time to contact the NICEIC they would agree me with that fuse boxes should not be wooden, they should be mounted on non-flammable backings and that sockets mounted flush with skirting’s are primarily avoided for fire safety reasons. I even remeber watching a NICEIC produced video stating the importance of checking that a fuse box is mounted on a non-flammable backing which was plasterboard in this instance. Imagine what they would have said if it was a wooden fusebox!

You had answered your own question a few posts back, but sorted now.

Yes sorted now, I didn't think to join the cables together and believe me, holding the machine, the probes and pressing the test button at the same time ain't easy with one of these dilogs! Plus, the fluctuating results do make distinctions between TNS and TNCS difficult.

It's not like the probes are desinged to be joined together. You have to hold all 3, the machine and press the test button. Not easy on a live test!

whilst mounting accessories on wood is not normally acceptable these days if it can be avoided, it was common practice until the 80's. in fact, socket and switch bases were made of wood as normal. the niceic seems to think that their interpretation of BS7671 is gospel. well, it ain't. IET wrote the regs. and that's what we work to. the next thing they'll come up with will be busbars mounted on top of the MCBs so that the electricity don't fall out.

As with a fair bit of bs7671, it seems open to interpretation. Granted, NICEIC isn't Gospel but having seen many a burn mark in electrical installations, I would think it best practice to avoid and ideally replace any wooden fusebox's and sockets mounted in skirting. Fire requires a heat source, fuel and oxygen. If you can remove the fuel, the fire wont start!

The older wooden fuse boxes will often have a separate Bakelite back panel

Whats the bet,if I was to give you a large soldering iron as a sort of substitute for a overheating cable and you were to burn away till you finished writing the unsatisfactory Eicr, any damage, scorch marks or other would be negligeable or not evident

Then if we were to substitute "old wooden Wylex" for spanking new "modern plastic rubbish",the survival rate would probably be extremely low

The Niceic regs have struck a cord once again,

!Flaming skirting boards Batman" said Tony Cable in his most dire of hysterical shouts
