Just heard on radio that a guy has been confronted by some locals after a spate of tool thefts. Whether he was guilty ir not hes now dead...
Im not advocating murder but is it a surprise when the police do absolutely nothing to investigate this van crime epidemic. Surprised there hasnt been more such cases.
Lancashire man dies after being detained by two neighbours | Daily Mail Online - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5059691/Man-dies-detained-two-vigilante-neighbours.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490

I’ve seen the inpact of drink driver’s on families. Many will forgive the person in court and move on which takes incredible spirit. Others not so. We’re human beings and all different I guess.
That into perspective, to wish ill of someone who has lost a life over replaceable belongings is a little silly.

Tradesmen (and women) tend to get angry as the stolen tools are their way to make money and keep their families warm, dry and fed. A lot of sole traders have gone under due to tool theft and this has had a massive impact on their families.

Tool theft is a very emotional subject, if I caught a thief in the act it would take a lot of restraint and self control not to break several bones in their body.

There is no defence for theft.

Nor for GBH

Someone who commits a crime presumably. Correct me if I'm wrong Pete!

Someone who breaks the law, simple really, presumably no your not wrong DPG, can't understand why the question was asked.

Something for another debate but; not had the odd biro or pack of envelopes from work, done an odd private job for cash, or even Mars bar from the local newsagent.

I have one memory of my late father in law, when visiting a local garden centre. He came out to my car, with a lovely tree sapling. We were struggling to fit it in the back of the car, wives were sat in the back waiting for us to leave, I said perhaps we'll ask them to deliver, he said F off I've just nicked it

The problem is that people who commit crimes do so without any real idea of what, if any, consequences there might be. This could be resolved over night if there was the political will.
What is required is a system of standard minimum tariffs for particular crimes. For example breaking into a vehicle and theft of contents could attract a MINIMUM sentence of 5 years. That way anyone choosing to commit that offence does so fully aware of the consequences.
The problem of repeat offenders is also easily managed. First offence, standard tariff, second offence, twice the standard tariff, third offence, 3 times the standard tariff and so on.
But there wouldn't be the prison capacity to cope I hear you cry. Again, easily solved. Lots of things get farmed out to India because it's cheaper. So could prisons. A contract to run a good quality prison service in India would no doubt save a fortune and increase capacity way beyond the present.
So your already once convicted van thief breaks into your van fully aware that if caught he's going to be spending the next 10 years in India. Up to him if he wants to take that chance.

Wouldn’t being in prison for GBH be a more loss of an earning than your tools? Which are replaceable, that we all have insurances for? Maybe I’m not grasping it as I’m employed!

And I’m not condoning tool theft by the way! There’s just better ways of dealing with it!

They won’t be missed?

They may be a parent, a brother/sister, a daughter/son.

Stupid to say to they won’t be missed because chances are someone loves them

They nicked my tools twice last year. What do i really wish them? Nothing less than that man.

Couldn't care less if someone loves them.

Tell that to someone who's had his van and tools nicked and can't afford to replace them straight away so cannot earn money ylto pay his bills.

Get one thing straight, these people do not give a ---- about you, your tools or your livelihoods.

Some of the responses to this thread are worrying and stupid.

There is possibly a good case for some people on this earth to face death, but someone who's been stealing tools??

Seriously??

Maybe he/she is stealing to feed an addiction.
Maybe they are being forced into it.
Maybe they owe a debt to someone.
Maybe they are just greedy and selfish.

Point is, there's always a reason and sometimes it ain't always as it seems.

Let the law deal with them.
Yep it is bound to be someone else's fault.

Prisons need to be less holiday camp more Victorian hell hole in my opinion. It speaks volumes when people deliberately break conditions or re-offend to get back inside.

The screws shouldn't be in fear of the prisoners, the prisoners should bow and kneel at their feet out of respect of the position or fear of getting a swift slap if they don't do as they are told.

As for all the liberal prison reformers... get a grip... prison should be a place everyone fears. Get that right and people may actually not want to go back there.

We're too dam soft and there have been far too many cases of 'it's a violation of my human rights'. Screw your rights... you broke the law now pay the price.

The main problem is the defence lawyers who defend these scrotes and end up getting them suspended sentences or a £100 fine. What's the point in that. Especially when the scrotes normally have previous convictions for similar (or worse) stuff. It boils the p*ss of the police as well as you and I.
I actually read something by a barrister the other day about defending guilty clients, it was really eye-opening. He said that unless the defendant confesses guilt to them, they have to try to prove them innocent, which absolutely makes sense. If they do confess to their defending team then they aren't allowed to mislead the jury or court regarding that.

He went on to say that their opinion or thoughts on the defendants guilt is totally irrelevant, and it's the job of the jury to decide, but that to maintain professional integrity they had to do the absolute best job to defend their client as is possible. This obviously makes it harder to convict guilty parties, but it's designed to ensure the least amount of innocent people end up wrongly convicted due to lax questioning, etc.
