Just heard on radio that a guy has been confronted by some locals after a spate of tool thefts. Whether he was guilty ir not hes now dead...
Im not advocating murder but is it a surprise when the police do absolutely nothing to investigate this van crime epidemic. Surprised there hasnt been more such cases.

Nobody deserves to die because of a suspicion they are a thief, or even if they are a thief. Vigilante groups will result in innocent deaths. It's a crime that the full weight of the law is not imposed on these scum, but death? Think about what you are wishing for, could be a member of your family lynched by a misguided hate mob.
Remember the Paediatric clinic defaced by a paedophile hate mob, that's the level of intelligence these people possess.

Before anyone accuses me of being a Guardian reading hand wringer....I read the Daily Rant, and it makes my blood boil that law abiding people have to put up with scum like van thieves. But no matter how tempting, vigilante squads are not the answer. There is a noble and long standing principle of innocent until proven guilty, and the right to a fair trial in this country. Without that mob rule and gross injustices will prevail.
This kind of thing is an angry reaction, but that does not mean it's right.

I suspect that this was death by misadventure. There may have been some condition of the victim that exacerbated the outcome of the encounter. I feel sure that these people did not mean to kill the person, maybe rough them up and teach them a lesson. It sounds like a very unfortunate set of circumstances, and a lesson for us all. I await the result of investigations showing us what exactly happened. My condolences to the family of this person, as his friends have said he did not deserve this. Death is not a suitable penalty for theft. If that were the case we would have nobody in parliament, or government.

I served for two years as a special constable for my local force. I know exactly what it’s like as a police officer dealing with van thefts. With more red tape than ever, CPS throwing out cases due to lack of evidence, over stretched and under funded no wonder the officers seem to the public that they ‘don’t do enough’ It makes my blood boil that people blame the first blue uniform they see when the problem is due to the management and government.

I attended a van theft last year, took details, no evidence on scene, calling forensics to check it over as a minimum but 9 times out of 10 they are too busy. On scene for 10 minutes before attending a grade A shout. Some of the hardest days I’ve ever done, good experience though.

In this instance, revenge is never the best option however sweet it may seem temporarily. Years down the line the people involved will have to live with the outcome. Completely agree with a couple of comments above, best not to judge until you have all the evidence, however, other comments are appalling.

There is possibly a good case for some people on this earth to face death, but someone who's been stealing tools??

Seriously??

Maybe he/she is stealing to feed an addiction.
Maybe they are being forced into it.
Maybe they owe a debt to someone.
Maybe they are just greedy and selfish.

Point is, there's always a reason and sometimes it ain't always as it seems.

Let the law deal with them.

A tragic outcome for the thief and for his detainers.

A friend once detained a person attempting to steal his van. Before the Police arrived, the thief (with a long record) apparently broke his toe. My friend told me he doesn't know how the toe was broken (...) but the next day Police arrested him and charged him with assault (iirc). How you detain someone who doesn't want to be detained without assaulting them I don't know. Anyway, my friend now has a criminal record and (iirc) the thief was let off with another warning and made a successful compensation claim as well.

that is a bad outcome Wilko. Iv heard similar stories. Personally I wouldn’t bother trying to detain. It’s not worth it. What would your friend have done if the guy pulled a knife out or something else?

Just get a decent photo the police know most of the local scum bags and facebook will do the rest.
