I had UK power Networks round to test whether my TT earth could be changed to PME at my house which it is now. They told me all ok and get utility supplier meter engineer to connect up. Called utility company, they said we don't do that. Just get electrician in to connect it up. I pointed out that I belive it is illegal for us to touch supply head - silence on other end, but eventually again said we don't do it. Called DNO back and told them, they were not happy but said it's definitely down to supplier. Anyone else had this problem.

SSE will even connect your tails to a self connect meter around here if the tails are there ready!

As I understand it Rockingit DNOs will generally have at least three different brands of kit in use so as to reduce the impact should a product recall be issued on any of them. But to be mixing and matching cable sounds plain daft

Don't misunderstand me, I like the WPD lads in my area, have yet to meet a bad 'un. But I do almost make sport out of guessing what the cable of the day will be. A couple of months ago they were using solid Alu cored, Cu neutral split con, before then it was Cu core and steel wrapped Neutral. Last week it was stranded Cu core, Cu neutral. And they seem to change the make and model of cut-outs quite often, too. It really does look like they just have to do a supermarket sweep with whatever's on the store shelves that day!

For cutouts the theory if having three or more different ones applies. Having many different ones means that if a product recall occurs they will have spares of another type to replace with and also a limited number to replace.
This idea is really meant for bigger things than domestic cutouts though. It wouldn't be very good if your whole county had to have its power turned off while all of the high voltage switchgear was changed due to a recall! With only one third of the kit affected you may not even know anything was being worked on.
