My uncle has been driving for 40 years and he had to do an extra test and get a special licence to drive a big Mercedes van for his work,
That makes no sense at all, passing your driving test before 1997 gave you a 7.5 ton licence
But it’s not.
The requirement is for the road to be iluminated during the hours of darkness.
Done one year before last. You need to go on a speed awareness course

Apparently these national speed limits don't apply to large white vans.
Is that why they are all hogging the outside lane of motorways at 85 mph
Aye, became aware a few years back. The fixed speed cameras round here don't differentiate, I have heard some ANPR equipped ones do though.
I could get mine reclassified with some modifications, but it's not worth it, I'll just keep it easy on the right foot.
I asked my mate who used to be a plod about this last night.
His view was that no fixed cameras can tell what category vehicles are ......... and Police car units with ANPR could but he thinks that the coppers driving wouldn't bother to check ..........
So nice and vague then.
Not been stopped yet

The article I linked to refers to fixed cameras that have the ability to determine vehicle types and differing speed limits. Apparently.
No white lines on the road, so am assuming they are average speed cameras.
Don't you believe it! HADECS cameras on gantries, as opposed to HADECS 3 on the side, are not always fitted with cameras but are still used for speed enforcement. National speed limit is enforced when no limit is displayed. Normally starts at 10%+2mph.Think the ones that ultimately give you a ticket are painted yellow, just to give you a fighting chance, whereas the variable speed cameras (M25 etc) are just grey; they are there to control the variable speed signs on the gantries when there's heavy traffic or bad weather, i.e. no prosecution.

Another little known law is that vans are also not allowed in the outside lane of motorways unless they have another side window to the rear of the driver’s.Is that why they are all hogging the outside lane of motorways at 85 mph
