Hi

My kitchen has eight 12v GX5.3 50W down lights, two of which have recently stopped working.

Having removed one fitting I discovered that one of the wires on the connector block for the bulb had burnt off. I disconnected the two black wires from the black connector blocks and took out the fittings completely. There doesn't appear to be a transformer.

I have 2 black wires disappearing into the roof space and into hardened injected foam (there is a concrete floored garage above the kitchen) and no sign of a transformer anywhere.

Are all eight down lights running from one transformer somewhere else? If only two of the lights have stopped working does that mean that it's not the transformer which is faulty but the fittings themselves?

Before I buy replacement fittings I wanted to be sure I am not wasting my time. Do I need to be searching for the transformer or will replacing just the fitting solve the problem?

Any help greatly appreciated.
Regards
Bob

Ok, sorry, done some more vigourous digging and found a transformer for each light bedded right back under the foam insulation, typically where you would expect it but not very easy to get to.

Just a quick check. If the light used to come on, then go off and then go on and off of its own accord before it finally gave up is it likely to be the transformer or the bulb holder?

Thanks
Bob

More than likely the transformer, although it could also be the lamp.

If you can you need to get the trannies away from the insulation as you will find they will all go like this.

Just re-read the post, there is a cable burnt off from the lamp holder. It is likely the fitting at fault. If the connections to lamp holder are sound then move to the transformer. However most are not designed to be in confined spaces, like under insulation as per Jason's post, and should be with 1.5 - 2mtrs of the light fitting.

The transformers currently, which have been there since new build in 2004, were probably less than a foot away from the fitting and just lying on top of the plasterboard ceiling.

Providing it is the transformer which has gone, I have bought a replacement light fitting too, can I not just put them back as they were? I have had no problems with the lights for 6+ years up until recently.

Thanks for all your help
Bob
