Using earth as neutral wire?

If I wired a socket with live to live, earth to neutral, and earth to earth, would this be dangerous and why? I only have a live and earth wire going to a new socket.

400w max would be drawn from the socket.

I've connected it up, and it's all working fine now. I don't have an RCD on the lighting circuit, so it did not trip

Now I know it's a **** take. You've wired an addition to the RFC and you have no RCD on the lighting circuit. The only other option is that you're terminally stupid.

But as a side note... At college, a bladdy long time ago, we were told about a system of wiring sockets which used a single core micc called a concentric system where the conductor was the live and the sheath was a combined neutral/earth. Never actually saw it in practice cos I think it was years old even then but definitely remember our instructor telling us.
Either that or I've gone totally senile.

Added: Maybe he is suggesting getting his feed from a light switch, hence no neutral.
