@Adam W - that would explain the washer not draining but been a pump it would just fill the sink then gravitate back into the washer or back up over the vertical washer waste pipe flooding the floor, also doesn't explain the rcd tripping which is the primary issue.
As I said I was just throwing ideas around really - rcd starts tripping the same time as most of the country freezes, and could well have something to do with a washing machine... Maybe the water is backing up and leaking into something... Maybe the bearings in the motor have gone.... Maybe there's snow thawing onto a light somewhere completely different and all this business with the washing machine is just a coincidence. I don't have all the answers.

Have you tried boiling a kettle using the same socket? If that works OK, then the washing machine is probably the culprit.

which part of staffs. are you. i 'm in Stoke next week.

so you'r down in yam-yam land?

Thank you all for your replies. I will try plugging into a different socket tomorrow and see if it works!

Hi,just a thought, but make sure you pick a socket which is also RCD protected.

You already may have a machine, with a fault,so choosing a socket which is not protected by an RCD,may do two things,it may allow the machine to appear to be working, and dependent on the fault, allow the machine to become hazardous.

Just a tiny worry,if you were to plug that extension in to a garage socket which someone has wired straight to the power station

a) Washing machine motor may have taken offence over size of load
..permanent problem
b) Extra steamy ,in cold weather / small leak ..may dry out with some warmth ..leaving not much to find , when it dries !
c) Other !

my washing machine will never trip a RCD. she don't even know what one is.

Thanks...it's a fairly new house with no garage/alterations. I'll plug extension into another kitchen socket. Thanks for the warning!

Thank you all for your help and advice....problem resolved with a new washing machine!

Thanks for the feedback. Always really nice when we hear the outcome..
