An assessment route that enables experienced workers to qualify to Level 3 NVQ standard has been launched by the JIB.
Designed for mature candidates who have been working in the electrotechnical industry for a number of years, the new programme means that those who successfully complete the assessment will be eligible to apply to the JIB for an Installation Electrician ‘gold’ card under the Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS)..
Operatives who apply will go through a professional interview with a specialist assessor, where their industry experience and existing qualifications will be taken into account. If they have suitable experience, they will then have an assessment programme developed for them that allows them to demonstrate their knowledge.
As part of the assessment programme, the candidate will sit the industry benchmark AM2 test, which is the independent assessment of occupational competence, provided by NET (National Electrotechnical Training).
Candidates will have typically completed the relevant electrotechnical theory training and must be able to provide sufficient evidence from site and by witness testimony of previous work.
“With this new assessment route we’re helping electricians who have many years’ industry experience and technical qualifications, but have so far been unable to be formally recognised at NVQ level,” said David Thomas of the JIB.
“Now, these people can not only have their skills properly accredited, but also gain access to a gold Electrician ECS card in order to open up more work opportunities and demonstrate their competence to the industry Level 3 standard.”
