I'm surprised at that shift duration, i didn't think you were allowed by law to drive anywhere near those sort of durations. I thought that was one of the reasons they had those tacho things in the cab's???

I think it all depends on exactly what you're doing and what bit of sparky world you live in. For example, those that work full-time for commercial-based companies (probably) manage to keep a fairly sane 5 days 8-4 type of routine, whereas those who are self-employed and do whatever the last phone call said probably do in excess of 60-70hrs/wk by the time all the paperwork etc is done. It's also difficult if you're on a house bash as by nature there are many times when you can't leave the job until its finished or it's not safe.

That being said, I know some blokes who only work a day or two a week and spend the proceeds on the golf course the other three (lucky them!!!)

I'm self employed and it varies.

I'm coming up to having worked every day for the last 6 weeks doing between 12 and 4 hour days. Prior to that, I was working "normal" hours and taking weekends off.

If you then throw in admin, banking, cleaning the van, sorting your tools and materials that adds a few hours to your working week.

Engineer54 we do have those tacho things in our cabs yes but the regulations mean we could work as many as 6 15 hour shifts in one week! Drive time is restricted though it's normally only the container lads doing them hours as they get loads of waiting around on the job. No social life, crap pay(ÂŁ7-8 ph) lack of parking facilities and toilets etc lots of broken homed because of it all while being treated like **** as everyone hates us can you see why I'm re-training now? :D

Are they all paid hours though or are you paid for 45 say, and the rest is running round in the van sorting materials etc? Are you happy with your e weekly pay after working such long weeks?

the only weeks I have earnt a winning wage was when I got up at 5, was on the job by six, and left at 9 pm, in between I did the same as running a marathon. then repeated 5 days,

I was well into 4 figures profit for the week but was hard

thats physical hours worked 37.5 normal, the rest call outs and overtime at time/half,double time, can get very happy sometimes when payslip drops on the mat,i work in fire/security industry so long hours are the norm really, can take its toll tho ie your constantly knackerd.:sleep1:

I *TRY*:juggle2: and stick to 7-6 Mon - Fri, with a Sat shift when it's bonkers.

The grief I get from 'er indoors' isn't worth the money more hours brings. Got to leave time for moving papers around the desk too.:ack2:

In any working day the maximum amount of driving permitted is 10 hours...this means being on duty (whether driving or otherwise) for anyone who employs him as a driver. This includes all periods of work and driving, but does not
include rest or breaks. Employers should also remember that they have additional obligations to ensure that drivers receive adequate rest under health and safety legislation.

Dom, do yourself a favour and stop trying to be a know it about **** all ;)
We drive to eu regs in this country, the domestic rules you're pointing out only apply to a very small number of uk HGV drivers.
Try to find the facts next time to stop you looking such a numpty :D
I'm not going to explain unless its absolutely neccessary as it's off topic, in interested to know what I'm letting myself in for if in the future i am fortunate enough to gain employment after training. Tar.
