Gavin has hit the nail on the head here, there are now 100's of sparks out there that have walked away from PV, and others are trying to survive, you are not even an electrician yet.

I have to be honest here, it is like walking into a job center and asking for a job on the Titanic.

of course, if you like politics, every changing rules, loads of paperwork, and you want to trade at a loss then go for it..

Could you advise as to any other renewable that's worth learning about if PV is on a downer? Alternatively, knowing what you know, suggest another profession to get into?

Maybe becoming a job centre operative is the way forward? :)

i thought of becoming an undertaker, but it's a dying trade.

sedgy34's advice is not said in jest! Indeed our dual qualified guys, plumbing / electrics, FGas, Gas Safe and PV trained, can turn their hand to any of the renewables that we have to install. Renewables is no longer electrics OR plumbing its both..

My advice is from experience!!
ive been a spark for 15 years and always found a spark could earn good money but gas fitters can earn treble a sparky earns in a day
the thing is the regs say any competent person can carry out electrical wwork the gas regs say only a gas registered persons can do gas works
that is the difference hence the gas/heating engineer earning more money

Get into gas or plumbing - From my experience of plumbers it's easier to keep electrickery in wires than water in pipes. And where's there's pain (a flood) there's gain. If you're in the south east speak to Able Skills at Dartford. Knowledgeable and helpful company that run an extensive range of fast track courses (still takes time). You need to find a company to get the experience though and that's the difficult part. Big solar installs seem to take on qualified people with little experience. There seems to be lots of low level work that may get your foot in the door. Hope this post is OK - I have no connection with the above mentioned training company

find a job as an apprentice for practising and gathering experience, learn the theory at your spare time,go to night school or learn from the website.
