Hi guys,

Here's an interesting one for you, if you look at the attachment on this post from the IET they define a domestic installer as " not an electrician "

If you go to the niceic website and click the 'FIND ELECTRICIAN' tab and select 'ALL ELECTRICAL WORK' it will display various domestic installers and approved contractors in your local area.

So is the domestic installer an ELECTRICIAN?

According to the people who write the national safety standards apparently this is not the case.......

Yet the guys who regulate them for crucial safety reasons seem to know otherwise.....

So who is right?

The IET

or

NICEIC

Craftsman is still used as the term for Private Soldier in the Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers, so bottom of the food chain.....as you progress you either become an Artisan (time served) or an Artificer (further training)...........

So on that basis, Im happy to be called a Craftsman Electrician, because as a DI, I am in at the bottom..............BUT LEARNING FAST!

Artificer...I haven't heard that in years!
When I was an Instrument Tech down Avonmouth way they used to call us Tiffies.

Electrical technician Vs Instrument artificer, electrician Vs instrument fitter.
Oh dear that old chestnut.
Many an hours arguments over whose job it was. We were members of the same union but fought like cat and dog over every thing, I was the shop steward, piggy in the middle! I couldn’t do right for doing wrong. I was whipping boy for four shop floor camps and the management!

I would presume a domestic installer is an electrician who installs in domestic premises. Although I don't personally consider the short course guys electricians. The 17th edition, 2392 and a domestic installers qual can all be done in 6 weeks with no practical experience.

domestic installers under any scheme arent electricians i can install in a house next day i can do an office refurb and the next i can work in a chemical plant or a water treatment plant or any industrial site the difference between REAL electricians and domestic installers who ive seen their posts on this site and their lack of basic electrical knowledge is surprising and shocking and i think imho they should give up hang up their cowboy hats and stop paying these stupid part p money making scams!

well I trained as an electrician a long long while ago
but due to working for the Government for many years on specialist works I was out of touch
even though I am supposed to be qualified
I took a part p course as a refresher when I was made reduntant and was surprised also at the lack of general practical electrical knowledge of some of the course attendess
however soem of them were also very bright and learnt fast and were in many ways more competent than me
I have worked with many time served electricians who were lethal and just did not care or did not want to keep abreast of things, often small simples problems were beyond them
one chap could not resolve a problem with a 3 way lighting system he just knew you stuck that wire in that terminal but give hime a test meter and he was stuck yet he was the foreman!!!
I hve also done other courses as well through Napit to add to my knowledge and am still learning after 40 odd years
but I do agree some of the people on the courses are ill trained but I have seen that in many other trades
just look at some car drivers!!

well you can compare the situation to a few rough sparks you know but that doesnt make you right jurrasic,

i know a few rough sparks myself but i know a lot of time served intelligent electricians which always outweigh the "oh i didnt have time to train " apparent electricians. Whatever excuse jurrassic your not an electrician and probably never will be you can go on about how quick the people on the courses pick things up but its not enough time to learn even a tenth of the practical and technical skills needed and thats why you see so many threads started by you domestic installers and your all shocking I wouldnt let one anywhere near my or any of my familys houses id slam the door in your cowboy face
