Discuss what is this forum actually for?? in the Electricians Chat - Off Topic Chat area at ElectriciansForums.net

As a sole trader this site is a great place to share information that is relevent to trading sparks.

Well first of all I find your post patronising and a cynical way to play mind games this forum is supposed to be for electricians to understand the interpitation and constant changes to our trade with regards to standards and regulations.

I can only speak for myself who has been in the trade for 37 years and I am happy to help I do not have an ego to bruise I don’t get off by giving someone a hard time. If I did then I would not participate.

So now we have that out of the way what is my problem or concerns . Well let me list them for you.

  1. The rush to get trained up within weeks or months is a concern within the trade. You just cannot jump straight into this trade it took me 6 years to get proficient
  2. Asking a question that could have been answered by doing a search on the site and when told this going into a huff . This is perceived as the OP being either lazy or immature or both.
  3. When they do post it is half a story it’s poorly laid out and they don’t thank the person for advice. Again there is a perception that the people who are replying are just being smart but the point that is being missed is the OP has to take an professional approach and apply themselves as this will set them up to progress a bit like a visit to the doctor tell him 2 symptoms and he has to guess what’s wrong tell him 10 symptoms and he will tell you exactly what’s wrong we are the same.
  4. Why do I not get a proper answer on my post when they tell me I should do x or y. Because they are trying to get you to think for yourself without taking the attitude of well if I don’t know some clown on the forum will tell me i.e. Hi I am stuck on a site can someone tell me the Zs of a 32 B MCB. Sent from my Andriod on …………….
  5. How should someone approach this forum and what will they get out of it Well they need to learn how to be self disciplined apply themselves and take a professional approach to the task in hand remembering to thank members for taking the time to help them this is not a belly or ego rub for the member this is to teach the OP manners and humility that will help them with future posts. The perception of scoring points only exists if you take that attitude towards an answer.
  6. Remember this is an electricians forum and if you want to learn then fine but
Don’t try to come across like some kind of wide boy or girl who thinks he or she is that clever they can manipulate a post to justify it for there own ends remember some members have been around the block a few times so don’t think your are unique because that’s when you get caught out and then the toys get chucked out the pram. When this happens they are all but saying I am not cut out to be an electrician.
7. What if I do not apply myself who cares well the only person you are letting down is yourself and maybe you are not cut out for this trade remember at the end of the day electricity can kill if you get taken to court you cannot plead ignorance as you are a Technically Competent Person in the eyes of the law

I had about 300 posts or something (ed-ectrician) and suddenly found myself locked out of the forums! I asked the mods twice and gave them about a month and have had no joy so had to re sign up. How lame is that?!

Seriously though second poster - What's "the other"forum?!

The 'ed-ectrician' member account is still active, it wasn't disabled in any way. What problem do you get when you try to log in under that username? Did you try going through the reset password procedure.

it's the modern generation, glenn. everything on a plate. i blame the parents mollycoddling them. 4x4 transport to the school gates, no climbing trees in case they graze their delicate skin. we used to get up at 5.00am,scrape the ice off the inside of the bedroom window, light the fires, make our own brekkies, wash up the dishes, walk 10 miles to school, do a full schoolday, walk the 10 miles home even in 2 ft. of snow ( schools never closed from a dusting of snow in them days. if the school boiler wouldn't work we kept coats on for lessons ), do the household chores, 3 hours homework. (as a real treat we were allowed to watch dr. who and star trek) , none of this cartoon network drivel and ipods. ah, them were good old days.

Met police are kicking some families out of property they own it's in the news at the minute.
One woman says............"My son has ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and I have a letter from his school saying that the move will be detrimental to him"
I had that but my dad used to kick my aXse and clip my ear for not listening ..........wtf is this country coming too !

I find the forum pretty helpful in general. You get the odd judgemental so and so but my word you get worse on site.

There are some nice chaps here who know their stuff and if you look through the sarcasm or wit you will find some helpful education.

All in all I find it a helpful place to learn new information

If I told you that I'd have to kill you. ;)

I look at this forum on a day to day basis and have put a few posts up but I am starting to wonder what this forum is actually for. When I first joined I found it really interesting to see what other sparks' questions and queries were. The more I read on here the more I realise that a lot of the members just want to "score points" with each other. I have read various posts about problems people have had and a lot of the comments are almost like personal attacks on them. - a lot of these people are apprentices and are still learning the trade.

To me that isn't what the forum is all about but maybe I am wrong. Please feel free to let me know your thoughts.

Nice troll post +1

Clear DIYers, Electrical Trainee's, or just pure incompetent persons aren't going to get treat like Gods when they're asking how to put themselves and others at risk I'm afraid. As for as anyone else getting stick it's usually just people having a laugh with each other, of course occasionally the wrong person ends up getting some stick but it happens.

One key note to point out: It's the internet.

End of preach No.2 (Biff)

Well said. The trouble is, a lot of the people on here have never been "on site", or even had to take a telling off from someone above them. Little wonder they cry when told to go and read the regs themself.
As for "point scoring". That's rubbish. We all get fed up with someone's attitude at times, but sometimes it's better to tell it how it is, rather than try to flower it up.

I think it's time you were made an Honourary Geordie.
