Discuss what is this forum actually for?? in the Electricians Chat - Off Topic Chat area at ElectriciansForums.net

The more I read on here the more I realise that a lot of the members just want to "score points" with each other.

It is exactly this.

With a vast experience in industrial/commercial, large telecoms DC systems and BMS, I initially joined this forum as I was re-wiring my house and had a fair few questions.

I am a time served electrician and 2391 qualified along with a variety of qualifications behind me which many others here also have to their name however I asked a few questions to make sure I was carrying out my domestic adventure correctly and I was branded a DIY'er...

If I asked 'I changed a light fitting and put all the blacks together and all the reds together and now the light doesn't work' then I would be happy to be called a DIY'er. This wasn't the case.

DIY'er is a commonly used term here for everyone who the main posters believe isn't as good as them. I was repeatedly told to pay for a real sparx to do the work and also to 'join a scheme'. Seeming as I only planned to do this one domestic job, 'joining a scheme' is the most useless piece of advice that could have been given and is what I expected from the individual that gave it.

I have my own term for many of the regulars here and that term is 'regs bashers'.

I prefer to be myself. There are people on here quoting regs left right and centre pretending to be something they are not. Nobody can quote regs like they do here and if they sit at home looking at these posts with their regs book to hand ready to post a smart --- reply, need to get a hobby or try some Internet dating sites.

I had a tutor once who liked to quote regs, the only reason he could quote regs numbers to the point was because he taught them daily. He wasn't clever, bubbles the monkey could probably manage that.

I agree and understand that there are some people that join here and are damned dangerous and should be directed to contact an electrician.

As I pointed out before in a previous thread that was locked down, we aren't here to compete!

Other than above, this forum is fantastic place and an absolute wealth of information, however you shouldn't believe everything you read on the Internet...

it's the modern generation, glenn. everything on a plate. i blame the parents mollycoddling them. 4x4 transport to the school gates, no climbing trees in case they graze their delicate skin. we used to get up at 5.00am,scrape the ice off the inside of the bedroom window, light the fires, make our own brekkies, wash up the dishes, walk 10 miles to school, do a full schoolday, walk the 10 miles home even in 2 ft. of snow ( schools never closed from a dusting of snow in them days. if the school boiler wouldn't work we kept coats on for lessons ), do the household chores, 3 hours homework. (as a real treat we were allowed to watch dr. who and star trek) , none of this cartoon network drivel and ipods. ah, them were good old days

Just want to comment on that load of crap, if anyone can fit all that into their day the days back then must have had a 34 hour clock.
Times really have changed now theirs only 24 hours in the day

You really are exaggerating.... I didn't have to get up until 5.30 for my paper round before school.

my post was meant to be taken in the context in which it was posted. as an eggageration. however, as a lot of the lads on here will tell you, it's mostly true, even if egged a little.

i did eggagerate . it was only 5 miles to school, and we got up at 6.00a.m. in the summer coz. we didn't have to light the fire march-october.
