As an Englishman first and a Brit second married to a Scot first and a Brit 2nd all I can say is that our daughters have no idea who they are.
My wifes family are die hard Scot, my wifes uncle was David Gray who played football for Scotland just after the war, and her dad was a Scottish junior international Stuart Gray, my wife ran and long jumped for the Scottish Juniors, so national pride is big with them.

They would love a more independant Scotland but not one of them wants a totally dissolved one. They all believe that the local election results would not be repeated in a general election.

Personally I think we should celebrate our differences in these small islands, it's taken us thousands of years of bloodshed and not too little of that is the fault of us English. IMO I think United Kingdom will be a poorer place without unity, but alas I think devolution will happen, perhaps not in my life thankfully.

as for westminster I can sympathise with english who get hot under the collar about scots voting on english issues that should be a NONO there may be an "English " break away YET more useless overpaid numptys to pay loads of expenses to

I tend to diasgree
The Scottish Parliament brought in the new building regs, and landlord registration- this alone has generated lots of electrical work

The minimum pricing of alcohol is a good step aswell.

I have just read the UK government has already conceded borrowing powers from the UK treasury to Scotland - the aim of this is to take the building industry off its knees and put people back to work.
They plan to build a lot more council houses

After the election of the SNP (the party that want Scotland to leave the UK) what comes next?

I ask this as the mood up here is upbeat.

The only sense of dread came from the young waitress today who said if we left Britian she would miss Britians Got Talent- her mate burst out laughing.:D

I ask this here as we can express views here that the general public do not see.

Some see the Scots as subsidy junkies, others value the union.

I think you'll find that in a recent opinion poll 70% of Scottish people said they were against leaving the Union. Alex Salmon, lost his nut earlier on this morning on BBC1, when questioned on this. Long live the Union.

I think there is another stage

They have proved (in the last 4 years) and may prove (in the next 4-5 years) that the SNP in the Scottish Parliament can make things work for the better.

Opinion polls can change, it all depends on the question(s) asked

The SNP have (as reported in 2 papers this morning) have the referndum ball in thier control (as it is a westminster matter Cameron has to agree the date of it-he has said it's upto the Scottish Parliament)
They also can now borrow (from the UK government) to do capital works. They want to do a new Forth Road bridge and build council houses, schools and hospitals- they will do this to help the building industry in Scotland

Of course he did,he must be cacking himself knowing he's got to hold a referendum that he's got no chance of winning and if he was really honest wouldn't want to win it! He'd literally be like a fish out of water.

I can't help thinking there are a lot of Scots who if asked why they voted SNP would reply "because I hate the English" which seems about as reasoned as someone voting BNP just because they hate immigrants, or voting Labour because they don't want to be called a "racist".
A bit like giving turkeys a referendum on Christmas.

I reckon we can all benefit from pulling together and pooling our resources, although I think the idea of the EU is a step too far.

Please give us the credit of having a brain
The country voted SNP because they have Scotlands interests at heart and are not controlled by westminster parties (aka Labour and Conservatives)
We have memories of the last time the tories were in (1980's) and the way they worked Scotland without a care- lots of Labour MP's maikng noise and bluster but very little concrete action.
This time we have a Scottish parliament and that will stand up against the ravages of the cuts.

I chose to holiday in Devon as I prefer to spend my money within Britain. I look on England / Wales / NI as neighbours.
Please do not use the race card with the SNP as they have had a Muslim MSP (the first for the Scottish Parliament- the guy unfortunaltely passed away), and now have another one -as well as labour

The other reason that most of Scotland voted SNP was that Labour were on a different planet- one MSP actually said that Scottish Labour made up their manifesto 8 weeks or so before the election

Welsh first by a long stretch, then British (for the sentimental history of that nationality only)

The Uk has England as the dominant country, UK and world issues rightly eminate from there, its the power house of the UK and nothing needs to change that,us other countries and regions need to catch up with the SE, not look to bring them down to our economic state

Devolution is an excellent progression that allows diversity, whilst retaining a sense of belonging to a greater entity
Independance is not a destination at the end of the devolution road
Most other countries have far greater devolution than exists here
It is more a sharing of power based on local needs

The Union will go on for the foreseable future

Okay then mate, tarrah. Lets see how long you last without the rest of the Union. Byeeeee.

Totally fed up with some of these arguments like the Andy Murray one you've all heard when he's winning he's british when he's loosing he's Scotish ........Well not for me due to some of the hatred i've heard over the years for the ENGLISH. I totally dont see things that way I've seen Scotish supporting Argentina rather than England in Internationals But the Argentinians killed Welsh Scotish and English in the Falklands ???????????? all fighting for one cause, yet these people still prefer to go back to all of all that braveheart crap and hate us English ...........So my way is a scot is as foriegn to me as a Spaniard same for the Welsh They are not English and dont want to be, Stick up a border charge for everything that they want from us and let them charge us no probs, airspace oil the lot, See how they get on if they do OK great.............Best a luck. Dont want to offend anyone you asked for an opinion .............you got one.
