Hi,

I wanted to know what electrical qualifications people have, the courses they did and what part of the industry they went into. With no clear one way to get into the industry, I wanted to really know if I am taking the right path and the route others took. I am coming from an IT background changing my career, currently contracting and am doing.....

Passed my second year 2357 (evening class)
Done the 17th editions regs
Intend to start my nvq for my 3rd year in sept and have found lots of practical work for it
Also want to do my inspection and testing which was the 2391 but has now changed but want to complete it all within the next year.
mayb another course or two after that like photovoltaic or design, but thats miles away...

Ideally my goal, I want to work mainly in commercial but staring out will be domestic as well to build up.

Does this sound realistic? What paths did you all take and where in the industry do you work now? Work for yourselves? Or for someone else? What sort of money can be earnt working for someone else or for yourself....
look forward to replies

You can earn up to £50,747.

That's fairly accurate.

its mainly what qualifications people have to where they are now in terms of domestic, commercial, inspection and testing? With they being so many fast track courses out there and part p etc. and some easier or quicker ways to get in the industry I wanted to know what paths other took

I have the 2360 parts 1 and 2.
The old 'c' course.
2391-10
2400
2391-20 (Design Course)
2393
2382-10
2382-12
2377-22
2377-32
2394
2395
2396
2399 (PV)
2919

Other training - Some crappy Logic Certification training on Part P and PV, C&G 4150, Compex, Ipaf, first aider, fire marshall etc etc

I have 15 years experience since completing my apprenticeship but I cannot call myself an Electrician. I can call myself a competent person.
To get an Electrician grading I would need to complete an NVQ portfolio - for the second time. Unfortunatley now I am office based I do not have the access to the work now to collect the evidence and so I am stuck working in the offices or for smaller firms.

I've got a neon tester driver so I'm qualified to do anything! :D

Spent 6 years contracting on big jobs while doing my night classes.
Now work for Local Authority on Public Lighting.
Have earned around £25k average for last few years.

Gonna do 2395 soon for my own satisfaction. Won't get a pay rise from it.

Atm I'm mainly commercial, Got me quals from serving my time + a few add ons. Should have done HND + degree but was too lazy.
Used to work overseas earning stupid money but missed me Mrs and kids too much so came home after 10 years of it.
