Hi,

I wanted to know what electrical qualifications people have, the courses they did and what part of the industry they went into. With no clear one way to get into the industry, I wanted to really know if I am taking the right path and the route others took. I am coming from an IT background changing my career, currently contracting and am doing.....

Passed my second year 2357 (evening class)
Done the 17th editions regs
Intend to start my nvq for my 3rd year in sept and have found lots of practical work for it
Also want to do my inspection and testing which was the 2391 but has now changed but want to complete it all within the next year.
mayb another course or two after that like photovoltaic or design, but thats miles away...

Ideally my goal, I want to work mainly in commercial but staring out will be domestic as well to build up.

Does this sound realistic? What paths did you all take and where in the industry do you work now? Work for yourselves? Or for someone else? What sort of money can be earnt working for someone else or for yourself....
look forward to replies

I actually have more qualifications for Photography and Man Management than electrical.

I’m registered with the British Library, with two scientific papers published
(chemistry).

I even have a Dewey Decimal classification number. (Nothing to do with anything scientific.)

But I’m retired now so what does it matter?

C&G Part 1&2
NVQ level 3
C&G 2391
17th Edition
HNC Building Services

Got bumped up for doing the HNC, seems to be a few management jobs out there for anyone who puts the effort in to get an HNC/HND/Degree. Looked at doing a degree part time but it looks like 4-5 years and might not be worth the effort. I done the HNC part time it wasn't rocket science, hardest bit was spending 3.5 hrs a night in tech after a days work twice a week.

Any one know of any SCADA training, pref N Ireland?

I have a degree in business studies (not a very good one), I am a scuba diving instrutor, Grade 5 classical guitar, qualified RGN (nurse), Part P, and got my ducklings swimming badge aged 5.

I dont like business studies, gave up diving years ago, still try and play the guitar during the periods when my nails arn't broken due to clever, intricate, electrical type stuff, not too keen on nursing but it pays the bills and love the electrics!!! Charge £20 p/hr to people I like and £25 p/hr to people I dont! :smiley2:
i have a degree in knockin out some crackin farts....
they never fail to get attention...

i may as well add mine into the mix:
Completed Apprenticeship
Electrical Installation NVQ Level 3 (City & Guilds 2355)
Electrical Knowledge Level 3 (City & Guilds 2351)
Achievement Measurement 2 (AM2 Practical Skills)
IEE Wiring Regulations 17[SUP]th[/SUP] Edition (21/2/12)
City & Guilds 2391 inspection & testing
JIB Card: Grade: Approved Electrician / Qualified Supervisor
IPAF mewps licence class 1B (Static Boom) (19/3/09) expires 2014
Asbestos Awareness

i used to hold a certificate for MoD sites too, but its expired!

I have the 2360 parts 1 and 2.
The old 'c' course.
2391-10
2400
2391-20 (Design Course)
2393
2382-10
2382-12
2377-22
2377-32
2394
2395
2396
2399 (PV)
2919

Other training - Some crappy Logic Certification training on Part P and PV, C&G 4150, Compex, Ipaf, first aider, fire marshall etc etc

I have 15 years experience since completing my apprenticeship but I cannot call myself an Electrician. I can call myself a competent person.
To get an Electrician grading I would need to complete an NVQ portfolio - for the second time. Unfortunatley now I am office based I do not have the access to the work now to collect the evidence and so I am stuck working in the offices or for smaller firms.

Show off!

{just kidding}

I have a Blackbelt in Origami
Im a high priest of the Mogwai council
I can touch my toes without bending my knees...... not a qualification but still an achievement at my age.

PS the thing i learned years ago was you can list all the paperwork you want but at the end of the day its your skill, experience, competence and dedication that makes you a good Electrician/Engineer
If someone get killed for your negligence a piece of paper won't cover your ---.... but competence will stop you been negligent in the first place and competence is easily proven in court where as incompetence shines out like a star.
