Hi Guys,

As a newbi need some help what essential tools do I need and also power tools SDS, BATTERY drills ect I am mainly doing domestic work, cctv and stuff I dont want to buy rubbish but also not spend the earth, any help would be appreciated
cheers

B&Q are doing the dewalt 18v with 2 batteries and charger for ÂŁ100 around my way ( its the older battery version but i paid ÂŁ230 a year ago) It is a good drill for wood, metal, plastic but not for brick etc

I have had every 24v on the market and the one that is still going is the makita sds 24v (approx ÂŁ300 with 2 batteries and charger) has chisel action for help in chopping in the occasional back box.

I use a Dewalt multi drill for prolonged or heavy duty work and even for 4 inch core drilling (although its not rated for 4 inch. I have drilled over 200 4 inch holes over 3 years and the drill still going) one down side is it does not have a reverse ( i have left many auger bits in oak beams as i couldnt get them out ) price ÂŁ360

Invest in your tools, they save time and money and make your job easier.
DONT BUY CHEAP RUBBISH

I have always used Bosch. The blue not the green. They give a 3 year warranty on their proffesional (blue) range. I have also got a green Bosch 240 2KG sds that I've had for around 6 years and I've abused the hell out of it and it's only needed brushes replacing.

This is a stonking deal that you won't beat for value and comes with a 3 year warrantyBosch 2kg SDS Hammer 240V & Free Drill Driver - Screwfix.com, Where the Trade Buys

I bought these a couple of weeks ago for back up. 3 years ago I paid ÂŁ115 for the same cordless on its own.

A good wall chaser that you can attach a vacuum cleaner to. Most jobs I have done in houses the people don't want trunking running down the wall.

Hi Mate,

I would reccomend De Walt for power tools, i have always stuck with them with very little probs.
First go for the 14.4v combi and then move on to the 24v with hammer only action as well, it gets you out of allsorts of holes.

Hand tools are the hardest thing to help with as they are very personal, i would go with CK but the choice is yours.

Hope ive been of some help!

I love gadgets and tools so have just about tried every brand/tool out there. My ideal set up now which I have in the van is:

Powertools

Bosch 36v Cordless Li-on SDS
Bosch 10.8v Li-Ion Driver
Megger MFT1552
Bosch 110v Corded SDS
110V Transformer
2 x 14m 110V Extention leads
1 x 110v Worklamp
1 x AEG 18v Circular Saw (For floorboards etc)

In my toolbag

Knipex Side Cutters
Knipex Pliers
Irazola Screwdriver Set
16oz Estwing Hammer
3lb Estwing Lump Hammer
1" Scutch
1.5" Scutch
Floorboard Chisel
Irwin Padsaw
Fluke T3 Voltage Tester
Socket & See SOK 32 Tester
Petzl Headlamp
Fluke LVD Voltstick
Knipex Cable Cutters
Stanley FatMax Knife
Knipex Waterpump Pliers
Bahco Adjustable Spanner
Bahco 6" Square
Assorted Pencils & Sharpie pens
Compass & Ruler (For marking out downloght holes etc)
2 x Tapes ( 1 x 3m & 1 x 7m)
20 & 25mm Morse Holesaws
Lots of Insulated Tape
Small Allen Key set
Small Torq Set
Facom Large Hacksaw
Knipe Insulated Junior Hacksaw

I also bought a great Stabila set for ÂŁ39 with 3 levels in and you got some free pencils and a keyring. I am also trying to find a decent file (Half Round) to keep the auger bits sharp and also tidy up when cutting metal trunking etc.

Some of the brands are horrendously expensive but if you look around you can always get some great deals.

The most useful thing I have done now is buy a large metal screwcase and have filled it with screws, plugs, washers, grommets, drill bits and other useful things for everyday use.

I only drink cold drinks so I'm afraid no kettle, however I bought a coolbox last summer and it is always in the back of the van.

Hope this helps

One surprising ommission from those lists - SuperRods - wouldn`t want to be without them...

Eskimo, please assure us you didn`t remember all that from memory - if you did, you really are too organised :)

That is how sad I am. My gear is outside in the van so it all had to be from memory. And I don't think I have missed anything out. Must get out more

I had a look at the super rods but didn't think I would use them much. Bought a cheaper Draper alternative about 6 months ago and have never needed them yet, although I do seem to spend a lot of time trying to slide trunking lids under floors and putting nails into bits of wood to hook wires that I just can't reach.
