Hey everyone. Buying our first house, the place is in need of a bit of TLC, old rewireable fuses, original BG faceplates. I'm going to rewire the whole thing as there are some things id like to put in. so far all i can really think of adding are 5 amp sockets for table lamps, one beside each double socket so you can dim them from the main switch, also an aico fire alarm system interlinked throughout, about 5 double sockets behind the tv.
It got me thinking about what you would put in your house gadget wise?

And I nearly forgot to mention, don’t connect a ruben's tube or pyro board onto your sound system. A young lad like yourself won’t be able to deal with the unwanted attention from the ladies you would receive. It’s like soaking their undergarments in Vaseline and turns them into man-eaters.

Haha some brilliant ideas here. forgot about running cat 5 all over the place, put a patch panel in the loft i think. im liking the idea of PIR's controlling the hallway. as for downlight what do you recommend? im industrial and only ever done one house, it was haler h2 pros from yesss we installed, could be dimmed as standard. also ive seen a lot of houses with led strip lighting either going down from ceiling or up from floor, ive only seen it once and it seemed to show every imperfection in the wall.
ive already got my sound system sorted, previous life i was a sound technician :punk:

ansel icage fittings with led gu10's

trust me, you will prefer it that you can just swap the lamp instead of the whole fitting.

the tranny is in the gu10 as well so just looping 230v from fitting to fitting.

(im tempted to try led huts fittings, ive got there led's all over the house)

I put in one of these dimmers to control the decorative lighting in the dining room. Can't think why more people don't use them.

Two way switching for the hall AND landing
hard wired cat 5
a decent aerial amp / splitter wired in the loft with 2 x ct100 cable to each position you want a tv
a full RCBO cu
hard wired bt phone points
surround sound cabling in your tv room
remote control for your central heating and water
non rcd circuit for your freezer

in key rooms two double 13Amp sockets side by side or perhaps an MK triple or two triples rather than the ubiquitous single double. eg where a TV might be placed. this is what I asked the electrician to do for me I our home.

I would put in plenty of cat5e and cat 6 cables to every room in the house and a patch panel somewhere. These can then be used with converters for almost any application. T.V's, HDMI distribution, CCTV, Broadband and phone points. Really future proof the place.

I did that about 10 years ago. I'm now in the process of adding extra RJ45 outlets...

And in response to the OP, I usually recommend installing a 13A socket by the doorway of each room. This means there's an easily accessible point for the hoover (or power tools) without having to crawl around behind furniture.

That's a good idea. thanks

took the wife to pick out sockets earlier, i pointed out nice mk logic, "nope its white" so that's out. She preferred brushed chrome/nickel look. i see LAP make a big range but never used them, what's everyone's preferred option for decorative sockets?

Don't even think about LAP. Cheap and nasty gear in my experience.

I like Hager as a brand, very good quality accessories, but I also don't mind the BG nexus decorative range.

I think BG is as bad as LAP! I may get shot down but I like GET stuff. Wilts and neweys own brand is GET.

'ornamental' Hamilton gear is good

I agree with you regarding their consumer units and white moulded accessories, I don't touch them, but I was quite happy with the nexus steel gear I used recently.
