We went to a job the other day where a customer was complaining about recieving shocks from her taps. This is what we found:

[ElectriciansForums.net] Whats missing here?

To top it off, she explained that she had that CU put in only a couple of years ago by a man called John Smith! I couldn't help but laugh!

What's missing here guys? :D

Yeah, we sorted the shocks out, we turned it all off haha. Na, we stuck a main earth in and ran some tests only to find severe IR problems and earth faults with each circuit. after a little looking around we basicly told her that to turn the electricity back on would put her and her house in severe danger. shes not short of a few quid so she just asked us to replace it all!

bang on! we got a cushdie little rewire out of it so we're happy, however, its not yet finished and we're taking our time coz she's gone to stay with relatives for two weeks so no certs issued lol

just wondering you said you put a main earth in i did this recently as no main earth in property but worying if i should have got the electrical suplier involved i put in the bigest earth size i had handy at the time above 25mm and it was tns with 1mm earth connected then cut off.

there was bonding to gas and water, thats why she was getting shocked off taps. oh, an my apologies, when i mentioned putting a main earth in, i actually meant i put an earth in, and connected it from the CU to the MET.

can you even get CU's for them anymore? where the hell did 'John Smith' buy this board from? ( Only installed a few years ago?) Nice!

I just assumed he had ripped it out from somewhere else and stuck it in here. it was horribly dirty inside for something that was supposed to be only a couple of years old

sorry i havent got back but missus computer bust and she insisted on going on ebay only for a miniute! so have i done wrong by instaling a main earth? how much would lecy board charge for this or is it their responsibility?
it is the property i am living in so just instantly resolved problem without thinking but maybe in the future might use this as a domestic part p compliance so do i just rip out my **** and complain to lecy board?

I would imagine that installing a main earth is the DNO's responsibility. I know it's not permitted but wouldn't it have been easier to shove the earth cable in with the neutral at the cutout thus transforming your TT to TN-C-S?

It's a great idea - just so long as you can guarantee that at some time in the future somebody doesn't make a mistake upstream of your installation & swap the line & neutral around. ;)
