O

oldsparkee

took my electrical exams way back in 1973.....all the info on the certs just say i have completed and passed " electrical installation work course B " does any one have any idea what the modern day equivalent is to this. i did contact C & G but they wanted ÂŁ34.00 to tell me, im out of work at the moment so dont want to part with what little money i have, appreciate any help

I'd really like to see some of today's newly passed electricians take those old exams papers!!!

I wouldn't mind betting that they would all be complaining and moaning, the same as they do for the C&G 2391 10(or whatever it is) There were no multiple choice answers in those days, you either knew the answer or you didn't, there were no lucky breaks of having a stab and getting lucky ...lol!!!

I wonder just how many would actually pass those older C&G exam papers??

why would you need substantial knowledge to pass the 17th lol?the answers are there as long as youknow were to look, you musta really struggled lol!and if u woulda read my posts im not just against anyone doing electrical work but those who have basic knowledge also, much like yourself

Because without it someone (off the street) wouldn't understand it.

as long as you know where to look and what it means.

Not worthy of a reply.
.

my bro in law sat his 2382 just last month and three other people failed it.
yes its easy if you study, but a lack of understanding or prior knowledge can definately have you fail it.

thanks for all the advice...i will look into options

as for the debate it started on wether a qaulfication makes you an electrician....in my long career as electrician/elecsupervisor.etc etc...i have had lots of people work with me, and for me who have had paper qaulifcations..but !!!...theres nowt like experience on the job, that where the real learning is.
elec companies tend to specialise in one area these days...where as when i first started you did something of every thing. i have had electrcians who have come worked for me,who say had 10 years experience in commercial who find it very difficult to to get the heads around domestic..and vice - versa of course.

Oldsparkee at least you haven't been turned off by the petty squabbling from a lone member, even after you've said that you already have the 17th and been a life long sparky he still rants on? Anyway I agree with the answer that its equivalent to a C&G 2330 level 3 and was probably harder back in the 70's. I don't agree with C&G charging ÂŁ34 to upgrade your certs, it was them that changed the quals in the first place! Stick around, loads of experienced older sparks on here that love talking about the good old days and pass on their knowledge to the 'young un's' you might just enjoy it all. Welcome.

Welcome to the Forum, if a young kid with no experiance can learn the trade in 3 years and you have 38 years under your belt I am sure you will get upto speed in no time. Best of luck to you mate!

edit: As to the bickering, you need to shut up and not derail a thread, anyone with enough intelligence can pass an exam, it is just learning what to say. To UNDERSTAND and ACT on that knowledge is a different matter.

I can tell you that if you differentiate x^2 you get 2x.....and in an exam you can answer that question, but you cant answer the WHY, or understand the HOW to reach that answer.

oldsparkee, same boat, did the Electrical Installation Work ( course B ), got the Electricians Certificate, just had to update a few times, nothing too much, that a bit of reading doesnt bring it all back, and a little help from some younger minds, just to get around mainly the lingo and terminology, I mean they dont have "jumpers " any more they have battery drills, lots of things to make life easier.
I resat 2382 / 2391, 16th / 17th, I did it with a scheme providor, and yes as stated, first time around they showed you how to do it, showed you how to work it out if you got stuck, and showed you how to get yourself out of trouble.
For far to long most of the exams ( as stated) 50/50 chance, not written scenarios, and explanations, a lot of these College / University Degrees seems to be the same, they teach you to pass the Exams, doesnt help you when you are out there in the thick of it, I suppose thats why they invented mobile phones to call for help !!
I still have all my college books and notes, only for memories though.
I must admit though I dont have the slide rule, but still have my logarithm book , to answer a previous post,
"The Questions are only easy if you know the Answers "

You did the same exams as me A in Installation and Maintaince is the first exam to get you an electricians grade. B is the second City and Guilds exam Approved electrician. C got you technicians grade.Work it out on the new exams it the same with different numbers added.OH and by the way still got my 14th edition regs book and logarithms book although I have forgot how to use the logs. There is nothing different today than back in 1976 although I now have 17th and 2391 testing. How many can remember oil filled resistance starting dc motors or how to make Pyro ends off.Or bending conduit with a long length of wood with a hole in it.Crawling along ladder racking pulling cables in 60 foot up in the air, tape measures with only feet and inches on them.

Why do you need to change certificates as long as you are JIB approved electrician if not they accepted my exam certs+ 17th and 2391 for approved. But then in March 2012 the JIB will not count for much with 8-12 large firms Crown House, Baileys, Smiths etc pulling out so they can bend the rules of pay to their own advantage,ie ÂŁ10.50 an hour containment, ÂŁ12 an hour wiring, ÂŁ14 an hour terminating and glanding.I am glad I only have a few years left because a full apprentiship as an electrician will not count for much. Its the old skilled mechanical assembler 2001 rearing its ugly head again. As said in the next post well thats the trade going down the swanny.

Welcome Rocketron god we are turning this thread into a philisan one.

I did the A B C ones as well though my A was Elementary Communication Skills for First Year Craft Students, I remember sitting in that class and some lad behind me asking if he put his name on the right where it said "name" or "signature", I knew then that this was not going to be taxing.

Our first "maths" lesson was going over the principals of addition, subtraction, multiplication and we had to skip the division as a few couldn't keep up, and the homework was the times table up to the 5 .................I kid you not

When I went back to work I told my electrician and he just said well son that's the trade going down the swanny.............

Times never change

I do feel old, even though amongst " old friends ", I didnt do the C, I still have my " jumper " ( rawl plug tool ), and I remember using a tilly lamp as a boy on remote building site lofts, with a long orga bit, and to be perfetly honest, I would have to read up how to use my log book as well...

I did remove a 3 phase contactor a while back with the mercury in it still, I think I need a lay down, its all too mu8ch for one day..
