Discuss where has everyone gone in the Electricians Chat - Off Topic Chat area at ElectriciansForums.net

Where the forum has lost its way, big time, is by doing nothing to the DIY'ers and electrical "takers" on the forum. That's why some people have been getting increasing abrupt with such posters.

Sure slap down on the sarcastic responses , but DO THE SAME to the DIY'ers who ignore questions put back to them.

Its been suggested on various occassions that there should be a yellow card system and this may be a step in the right direction imho

I've just had a look through the reported posts forum. And I have to say I can't find one reported post saying "Diyer" of any form and I've just read 6 pages, I think 50 posts per page.

I think we need a bit of an announcement to tell the regulars to REPORT POSTS BY SUSPECT DIYers!!

It's not a moderator or forum problem though in the main. A forum is built up of members, and we need to do it together, not just moan about it together.

Do you agree?

Whats that mean fella? and how do you guys know who are "electrical takers" the problem is some members think they know everything and do not tolorate anyone else's views, I have seen some members ask questions which seem resonable and yet they are slated by one or two who have to be all big and hard and aggressive, why some members think slating of others when they ask questions is laughable is beyond me, my view is if you can't say something construcutive don't post, I have seen new members ask a question and have ????????????????? after a reply, whats that all about then? some of us have views and have been in the trade for 30 years, but because we are not in the "GANG" we are mocked and the posting down right unacceptable, if non electrical members ask questions then we should suggest they ask an electrician not publicily humiliate them, I have read many threads here as have others and it is happening daily almost and pretty appalling IMO.

They're upset because they missed you Jason ;).... i haven't noticed you upsetting anyone either so did scratch my head too.

I think the one member was taking it upon himself to inform us of the "many we've upset" by doing 'something' he's still not yet explained to be honest.

Lets let that one go I think he's got the message pretty directly. More members so far have expressed their annoyance than he's managed to even speak to directly let alone quote. Probably still even reading up on trolls and what they are.

I'll happily report them, but thats not really the issue. There are some DIY'er who come here and quite quickly realise there is more to this sparking than they think and then there are those, like TED GLEN who take the proverbial thread, after thread.

well you did tell me didnt you!! for your info switching between this nonsense and quoting a 1megawatt solar farm, you obviously have spent time reading up on trolling as you know what they are lol

Some good points raised there but I can't address them all with this reply.

However just to clarify about the 3k thing. The lads in there will be helping shape the forum a little, and it would take years to implement changes if 30k members all had a say. So far the lads in there have only used it to suggest good things and help. It's not a "club" you need to gain access to per se, but one you'd hopefully enjoy being part of and thankful for contributing so much that you get a little back.

As for newbies V established members - we'll do what we can there! We're trying!

Still trying to understand how "HI and welcome to the forum" posts that make up a vast amount of some members post counts can help in shaping the forum

May be this can work both ways a well constructed question that shows the poster has done a bit of research before reaching for the keyboard will illicit a more reasoned response from the members, it is all too easy now to want everything on a plate. Can't remember the song but I recall it had the line "I want it all and I want it now" and that sums up what some of these posters want when they post what on face value is bread and butter knowledge questions

We all know the level of training within the industry is falling at a time were it is becoming more complicated with technology unfortunately with the changes that have been implemented in the last few years the safety statistics don't reflect some of the dangers due to the lack of training while part P was introduced under the sixteenth edition it has been aided safety wise with the RCD everything seventeenth

The quick training has redefined basic knowledge from what it was when the time served guys trained and being one of them I can understand some of the frustration that causes when some questions are asked in an industry were safety is a primary concern it's difficult to sit on your hands to stop you hitting the keyboard to tell someone they are out of their depth

In my opinion this is not the right road to go down. There is a lot of hostility on this forum, towards what some members regard as diy's. And this is the problem, assumptions are made on just a few lines of text and in some cases a torrent of abuse follows.
I totally agree with mjd here, it is the aggressive and insulting posts that should be reported not the sometimes naive question poster. I have nearly 40 years in the game and was looking at various forums before choosing this one. The reason I chose this one was because of the various levels of experience, which I feel leads to a more interesting conversation.
If an outraged member finds a post that they assume is a diy'er the all they have to do is ignore it and scroll down. Il repeat that. Ignore it and scroll down.
by doing this there there are no insults flying and maybe preventing a heart attack. It's that simple.
On a positive note, over the last two weeks i have noticed a large number of members with low post counts but membership of over a year, starting to post. This can only be a good thing, maybe they feel that the almost certain mauling they would have got a few months ago is less likely. Why this is happening now ill leave to others to answer.

Why exactly do we need to report DIYers?
I was under the impression that the forum was open to everyone, and that there is the 'Arms' for tradesmen.
As far as I'm concerned, I will offer advice and my understanding of BS7671, Part P, etc to anyone irrespective of their experience or qualifications.
Pehaps I have misunderstood the function of this forum?
I thought it was somewhere where people could obtain advice?

Couldn't agree more spinlondon. Also the new section for training electricians is a great idea as it provides a section where questions can be asked and answered in a polite and informative manner. However it is sad indictment that that couldn't be maintained on the main sections of the forum, as it appears that this was set up to provide a level of "protection" to these people from certain members. This reflects very badly on all of us.
lets hope that that there is a new wind blowing and people are going to be more considerate and more obliging to people with less knowledge.

sedgy There are 2 top cats I was here before the other one and I don,t go telling people off I don,t know why the other Top cat was banned but I welcome him back after his ban.

It has taken quite a few of us a long time to get the training section on the forum, well over a year of suggesting it to Dan and now we have one, thanks Dan. Its very early stages atm and hopefully it can be put on the main forum sometime in the future. Its not set up the way I would have done it but it works for now, the attitude of the trainees and advisers is brilliant, just need more trainees imho. More trainee questions are asked in the main forum than the training section anyway so dont feel left out. Let us build it up, bring in more members and help out the next generation of sparkies in a nice and friendly manner. That is what the trainee section is all about.
