Discuss where to get subbies in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

If you don't have a network of subbies you can call on, and if you can't find any on here (you might be lucky if there are a handful of other forum members near you, let alone looking for work when you need them) then you're looking at agencies.

Don't expect too much from agency workers.
Look at it from their position and think about why they're doing it - if you only want them for a few days they either need to find another job when you've finished with them, or earn enough in those few days to cover the times when they haven't got any work.
Some are new to the trade and haven't got the experience which employers are looking for, some are older than employers want, some have other commitments or only want to work locally, but then there are the others, who can't get a job on the cards because they're just awful. You might find you have to get twice as many subbies as you thought you might need because they might only work half as quickly as you'd like them to.

You can't tar all agency workers with the same brush. I was lucky when I was with an agency because it led to a permanent position... but there were others who were total wasters.
That's the same with regular employers as well. Some good employees, some not so good. Its just so much easier to get rid of agency if theyre no good.

Its complete pot luck, just had a lad start today who's moved up north after working on Crossrail and he has rolled his sleeves up and cracked on with it, it's when it's a large job and people can effectively hide and be carried by the job, some I've had on this job have been terrible, but it was seen to that they weren't there long! There's some top lads about willing to graft though, good luck

Somerset nuclear reactor Hinkley C is where alot will be going. Rumour has it there's three years just on containment.

I used to live down that way it will suck alot of labour up and big bucks to be made.
