Which course?

Hi this is my first post im 26 my names rob. Im a carpenter/kitchen fitter by trade. Now i have decided to do my domestic electrical installers course. Ive booked a course which cost me £2050 it includes Logic domestic installers cert, 17th edition and inpection and testing 2394-5. They have said i might aswell take the 2394-5 as i will be able to work on more stuff. Ive been told this is a really hard course for a newbie and i dont want to fail it at a £500 re test. Do i really need it? The furthest im only ever gonna go is put a new consumer unit in. A lot of kitchens i do they want to add remove sockets and install cooker supplys so therefore sometimes the boards are not up to regs so they need a new boards can i undertake this on a test and inspect 2392 as i can do that for the same price and will be alot easier for me. I will register with napit or similar when completed. Thanks for your help in advance. Rob

The furthest you're going to do is put a new consumer unit in ... lol ... i like how you make it sound a walk in the park. CU upgrade / replacements are often filled with floors. E.g. borrowed neutrals. What quite a few sparks don't do, and pay for later is not doing some basics testing before replacing the CU.

2394/2395 is a must IMO.

i'll be blunt. stick to kitchen fitting and let qualified electricians do the electrical side. i don't fit kitchen units.

I have to add something to this post as I think its going to be an interesting one..... not for the right reasons.
You may wish to edit your post as it does come across like changing a CU is childs play. I presume you didn't want it to come across like this.
I am curious about your course though. How long is the course and how much of it is hands-on?

When i say im only going to undertake up to a cu change i will be possibly adding new circuits to kitchens cooker, ring main etc. and cu change. I wont be doing any periodic testing full house re wires nothing like that. Do you think i still need 2394-5

I can't force you too take the 2394/2395 because they are actually classed as optional extras, but what i can do is strongly advise you take them - if anything goes wrong, your neck is on the line. If worst came to worst and you ended up in court, having these qualifications shows that you know (or should know) what you're doing ... and in the electrical trade you're guilty until proven innocent.

CU changes require ElC's to be completed, as do 'new' circuits. Both of which are also notifiable. IMO 2394/2395 are essential.

IMO go to college like the rest of us and get properly qualified, This does not include mickey mouse short courses that are there to rinse you of lots of hard earned cash for little in return.

College will take 3 years and an NVQ 3 and AM2 is what you need to be "Fully Qualified".

As has already been mentioned, the 2394/5 is an extra course. Certainly worth doing but maybe not worth taking until you have a decent grasp of what you are doing.

I would echo the above advice and urge you to save your money before it lines the pockets of someone willing to pull the wool over your eyes. You will be left poorer and little to the wiser, and certainly not competent to carry out CU swaps, no matter what certs you came out with.

The 2394/5 is aimed at fully competent and experienced testers to enhance and clarify their knowledge. To offer the course to know nowts, this centre must be coaching candidates through it. Any decent centre will have entry requirements and offer the course over weeks not days. The cert means nowt if you haven't absorbed the learning.

Would you expect someone to become a fully qualified and competent carpenter and kitchen fitter in 13 days ? Oh, hang on, forget that bit.

5 days to do the 17th, which is passed by doing a multiple choice exam with the answers in a book in front of you.

3 days learning what it takes us 3 years to do.

And there is also no way on earth that you'll pass both c&g 2394&5 in a week.

Fair play for coming on here and having a sensible conversation, but pay attention to what we're saying, that's not the right route.

I have recently taken the 2394/5 and it was spread out over 10 weeks just to give you an idea.

fair enough lads get the idea. right I've paid 2050 pounds out wonder if its a simple refund there bound to kick up a fuss. i can see your point at the end of the day I've been around the trade about 8 years now and know basic and safe knowledge imagine a 16 year ol lad from school taking this test and becoming a full quail spark now thats dangerous. i called the IET today to see if they can give me an answer because i can't see it being true myself even them couldn't tell me.
