Hi all,
Please don't slate me, saying i should know this already, im asking for advice not a dig.
i have not long started up my new business and have i have just taken on my first big job. im fully qualified and registered with Benchmark. So heres the job, a complete renovation of an old property, on my side and electrical wise its a complete rewire and many additions, outside lighting, LED Bath panel lighting, kitchen Pelmet LED lighting, Testing & Inspecting etc etc. heres the questions,
1- what certificates should i use, due to it being a rewire plus additions.
2- He has first fixed the downstairs ( house is set out as, bedrooms, bathroom downstairs, living room, kitchen upstairs) i would like to dead test the circuits, however without testing each individual piece of cable due to him terminating each cable in the patresses etc, he has not added accessories just terminated the cable. what's your recommendations. ive heard of bad results from using connector blocks and i dont think is good practice, i could be wrong, im asking.
3- The LED in bath panel- the bath panel will be marble, i do not fancy due to my inexperience drilling into a ÂŁ300 piece of marble.
4- He has the power distribution company coming out to move the position of the mains incoming. as currently its down stairs connected to the distribution board, and he wants it moved upstairs, could i not just insert a cut off switch and take the tails to the upstairs, inside regulations, to the the distribution board. saving him a couple of grand. or just let him crack on and waste his money.

If your thinking ive bitten off more than i can chew, maybe your right, but i need to learn and i work is slow so i cant turn it down.
All help is mega appreciated.
cheers guys/girls

its just that we get a lot of short course Electrical Trainee that come in here and just ask advice to basic stuff without at least attempting to research it for themselves first...

another classic is the students...that come in wanting answers to homework...

you need to know that...before anything else...as if its high...and you dont verify this untill last minute then its going to hold you up...isn`t it..

I don't have kids - i'm not an idiot. I have a missus, i have a life - you however, are a clueless wannabe electrician.

Now i think you're the one that needs to sort himself out - buy books and self study.

How can you expect anyone to help you after a comment like that? I tried to help, but after a comment like that, im out and ive edited my earlier (helpful) post.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do. My input here is done.

I spend every night reading, and lucky for me i have an uncle who has been doing it years who will give me unbiased advice, but i thought i would put my thoughts and advice seeking on here to see what "good and useful advice" i could get. Result 0. unbelievable.

Thank you, that's useful advice. I have not touched it yet bud as i wanted advice, not how to do it, i know its always dodgy taking over someone's work and i appreciate your advice.

Hi,

Ive not read all the posts but can imagine what's been said etc.

Just a few observations on your post, you say you are with benchmark, I'll be honest I have never heard of them and I don't know anyone who has. You may want to check the credibility of who they are or even if they are genuine.

You have mentioned you don't know what certificate to use, if it's a rewire, is it a part or full rewire, either way that work needs a EIC not. Minor cert, if this is a full rewire, it should be covered in that one certificate, if it's another and you are making changes to other parts, then they may only warrant a minor works cert.

You keep referring to a third person of 'he' and I don't know who this is, but as you have stated you have not installed the wiring, you would be some what of a fool to sign it off, signing off others work is not what you should be doing.

The marble, never drilled marble, I'd be inclined to take it somewhere or get someone else to do it who had experience of working with it.

As for the issue with the DNO and meter tails, yes you could extend them yourself from the consumer side of the isolator, if you do it properly which is more complicated than just running a few meters of meter tails as it would have to be fused and probably better off in SWA for protection etc.

You say you are new to the game and I'm not going to slag you off, but feel these are very basic questions and you probably should not be undertaking any form of unsupervised electrical work due to your uncertainty and lack of knowledge.

Please can you confirm that you have public liability and professional indemnity insurance as I feel with these questions and the work you may bite and cannot chew, you may need to use it...

Sorry Glenn, not touched it yet. only looked and discussed it.
is this job a start...or pending?

if its a start then go in there and ask them if its OK to get an external Loop...make a note of the earthing arrangements whilst there....and check any bonding n all...

if its provisional...then are you sure this fella doesn`t just want you to note his work?...

Thank you, that's useful advice. I have not touched it yet bud as i wanted advice, not how to do it, i know its always dodgy taking over someone's work and i appreciate your advice.
whoos work are you `taking over`?...is this some builder who has got one of his jobeys to drag/yank some cable about....then your supposed to go in there and sign it iff?
