Hi all, Im just looking for some guidance with swa cable and the sizes that I should use. We are wiring a consumer unit in the garage/shed from the house cu. My mate is a sparky and he said that if I can do the donkey work so to speak he is happy to come and make all the final connections and test the circuits for complying with the regs. He did state what size swa to use but that was a few weeks back and at present he is on a months holiday abroad so one cant check. The garage/shed is on a 3 mcb + incoming mcb cu. These mcb's are 32a, 16a and 6a. There are 3 circuits, the 1st on the 32a mcb is radial and supplies 4 dbl sockets, the 2nd on the 16a mcb supplies a single socket connected to a tubular heater and finally the remaining 6a mcb supplies the single baton tube light. The run from the grage/shed cu is approx. 10 - 12 meters and is to b e terminated at both ends into metal junction boxes ready for connection to the respective cu. One site sparky I spoke too simply advised the bigger the better, but others have said you may be able to utilise 6mm as it is unlikely for us to use all the sockets at the same time, two sparkys advised at least 10mm and one stated 16mm would be the way to go. However my employer has offered me a roll 24 meters of 6mm 3 core pvc sheathed cable, one opinion is that we can use this in conduit and run two lengths of cable from cu to cu, one supplying the 32a mcb radial circuit and the second to the 16a and 6a circuits. I have approx. 10 days before my mates return to run the cable in anticipation of him making the connections a couple of days after his return.

Ok then.... what is the MCB size the SWA is going to be wired to in the house CU?

Wow a man comes to the right place to ask and gets a bashing.
I have text my mate and asked, twice in fact and had no answer. I have considered waiting till he comes back but then I don't know how long we'll have to wait for him to do the work. The idea of asking an electrician is a good one, THAT'S where the 4 different opinions come from regarding which size cable.
The install will be legal, all I have done is install the circuit conduit in the garage and positioned the sockets with the cables run in them but not connected, positioned the garage cu and fitted the two metal boxes that the swa will terminate into. Now I want to dig the trench to bury the swa cable and drill the holes in the walls to feed it through ready for my sparky mate to come and connect it all up. I bought all the components and he gave me the cables to run all the circuit rings with my mate, but me being an idiot said I would get the swa later, and now I cannot remember what size he stated.
with a name like DIYtom.....
says it all really...
go get an electrician to do it....there will be some in here near you...

and the OP says his electrician is on holiday and can't be contacted. ..... oops , back in a mo. got to fix the conservatory roof. a pig has just flown into it.

Why bother paying your sparky friend? Just go out and buy an extension lead long enough, cut the plug off and connect to main fuse. Free electric. Then if its green, run it along grass to garage. Make sure you stamp the cable into the ground so it can't be seen.

seriously, though, best asdsvice is to install 40mm duct with a draw string in it till the spark gets back.

Don't bother with a duct, that's for losers. Just bury the extension lead, make sure you put it in a hose pipe first though for triple additional protection. Worms may eat the cable if you dont. You can't cut corners with lectrics see.

Why do you think you have come to the RIGHT place. This forum is for sparkies to help each other. Not give away DIY advice FOC.

true, murdoch, but a bit of friendly advice as my post #21, nowt wrong with OP burying duct and doing the donkey work. saves our backs. LOL.

that's where i draw the line. it's one thing to give a bit of advice, but a bridge too far to tell them how to steal our jobs which are hard to come by in the first place.

Put what ever cable in you can get, if its being connected by the sparky mate he will ensure the circuit protection at the house will be rated so as to provide the correct level of protection for the cable used

i've got some 1.0mm T/E min red/black from a strip-out he can have. owing to it's antique value, i could not consider anything less than £100. i'll even throw in a 5A 3036 complete with carrier.
