Thanks lads! :)

The daft thing is I used to know those little tricks but somehow seem to have forgotten them - and other things as well - like the other day I decided to fire my Celeica up just to swirl the oil around a bit and couldn't understand why it wouldn't fire up.

I had forgotten about the immobiliser .....

:auto::86:

BTW guys its water based lube not oil for SS

Good luck with that when it's just a backbox lug.

One of the best for hand tapping / threading I found was this https://www.rocol.com/products/rtd-compound-reaming-tapping-drilling

Also available in tubes - no need to buy a bucketfull !!

Trefolex is another good compound.

When I was machining stainless steel then soluble oil was used but quite a strong mix - NOT "watery"!!

Centre Lathe Turning & Single Point tool screw cutting in stainless and some quite exotic metals for the M.O.D. was my specialty

Colchester Triumph 2000 - It could be the brother of the one I used to play with.

That must be the size of a house judging by how small it makes those pallets look

Anyone fancy a nibble on that?

Overall length 96 inches.

Weight 2820 lb.

Centre Height 7.5"

Distance between centres 30"

Motor 7.5 HP

Cost (in mid 1970's) about £7k from memory

Just a nice handy-sized lathe. :)

That is not a spiral tap.
Spiral taps are spiral, similar to a drill, which allows the scarf to be drawn away and not clog the cutting surface.

That it true - it is not a spiral tap.

THIS is a Spiral Tap .....>

The other one is a Spiral POINT tap and is exactly what I described is as!!

The spiral point directs the swarf down the hole and is used for tapping through holes - such as in the lugs of back boxes.

I agree with geordie and i also use rocol and if you're tapping a 3.5 hole you'd be need to drill it out with a 2.9mm bit.
to be honest i went with a 3mm drill bit and the only brand i could get at short notice was dormer but i will get a rocol at some point (got some cutting oil as well)
