Discuss which tester is the one for me ????????? in the Electrical Tools and Products area at ElectriciansForums.net

hi lads just about to buy a new tester this week and cant decide which one is the meter for me ?
there are two meters that im looking at are the fluke 1652c or else the megger mft 1720.
i work in the domestic area more than anything else but always worked for a company and now im going out on my own :puke:
needcit to be simple and fast to use all and any comment are welcome.

Hi Vinny, take a look at the comparison chart. It compares various models of MFT against each other and should give you a good idea of what to look out for with regards to functionality.

Good Luck!

Really? Have you ever used one?

Yes, but only when in college, they put me off so badly never looked at since.
When I spend a ÂŁ1000 on a meter I expect it to be capable of the job.
Trying to measure the resistance and getting figures varying by 5 ohm either way when the true figure should only be about 1 ohm is appaling.

After bitching about them for a while I have been told that it is just an issue with the leads.
Still, when you spend ÂŁ1k on a tester the leads should be spot on!

I would suggest that using a meter that's been abused by beginners at college is not a fair example, although the leads are the weakest link, as with all test meters

If your using a meter that is 5 ohms out either way then
it's obviously in need of some urgent attention!

I bought a Metrel from the good chaps at test-meter.co.uk

Got the MI3000 and I can't really fault it so far. Very easy to use and results are clearly displayed. Croc clips and probes are good quality (better than Megger IMO) and I've had no trouble with nuisance RCD tripping during Zs tests.

Only downsides are:

- the test probes all come on a single plug so you always have a spare lead hanging about if you're doing a 2 lead test (IR, continuity etc)
- the bright yellow and blue colour scheme makes it look a little too like a kiddies toy... Tutors at college take the **** out of it because it resembles a childrens games console (one of them always whistles the Super Mario theme when I get it out!)

I know Metrel don't have the best reputation I'm happy with mine and know a lot of others are happy with theirs too... It's not the BMW or Mercedes of the tester world, more like the Ford or the Fiat (which as the car loving amongst us know, make some pretty decent cars!)

Hi DNS1,

Thanks for the feedback and the business, it's always great to see how our customer's are getting on. Just a point with one of your downsides - if you're carrying out a continuity or IR test with the MI3000, you link two of the test leads together so that you shouldn't have any spare leads getting in your way when conducting these tests. Unfortunately, I can't help with the colour! Tin of plasticoat maybe? (Not advised!!)
