Why is it everyone seems to go for the TEST TEST TEST route when someone posts a problem "My light isnt working what can it be" Is met with "Test the I.R. of all circuits ect ect ect answer change the bulb !!!

Im all for guys having teckky knowlage BUT they also need to start simple lSo much emfasis is placed on testing for fault finding ect these days and not enough on simple things Lights dont work TRY changing bulb Test load side of switch for voltage No Voltage theres your problem a MEGGER Has never fixed a fault but common sence and knowlage in spotting the simple things has

....regardless of what these "quick fix" course providers would have some believe......if it really was that easy then everyone would be at it....and we`d all be out of work.....[/QUOTE]

Thought everyone was at it

Oh God. Is this going to be yet another thread that drifts off in to the abyss that is the "5 week wonder" debate?

Common sense and a good process of elimination I find to be the two best tools at my disposal when fault finding. Obviously, having an understanding of how an electrical installation works can come in handy too! LOL.

some threads tend to drift dont they..lol....in which i have played a part here..lol......well we all know about the failings of those that would "regulate" our industry dont we..lol........

exactly Im also meaning the ones who ask the questions The "Qualified Electricians" the ones who are taking money for changing C.U.s and installing stuff but cant find a common, simple fault IMO electricians should be MORE Regulated by ONE SINGLE body not loads of scheme providers who give out scheme numbers to people with little knowlage to go into someones home, work and claim that "Thats Unsafe!" " Thats Ilegal!" " thats needing upgraded!" ect but then ask on forum if said "Fault is ok or can be fixed!"

there was one the other day about a c.u. having 3 cables in an mcb, fuse he "cant find replacement parts !" FFS he didnt look very hard BnQ sell them every wholesaler can get them GOOGLE could probably have found them

There's a few good points raised there, esp with customer questions - a basic requirement. Parts that cant be found - that should form part of your on site survey. Regulation bodies - more on site assessments but ones chosen by your scheme provider not the spark. I also think scheme providers should do more with on site training too. It's not about catching people out, it's about continuously improving standards.

I agree totally. Whatever fault you have its about understanding the process that the fault is involved with. I have 80% of the time do resitance (continuity) or IR tests or voltage. I understaand what Tony says as I been there. Testing to the point of confusing myself. In my case if I cannot find the fault by these simple tests I am usually reaching for the programmer

anyone got any tips on rewiring my house. i am able to change a bulb and change a plug, ive even made an extension once, thought id try rewiring a house now.
sorry couldnt resist.
on a serious note
it isnt just happening in electrics though its happening in gas engineering too.
i went to college and passed all my quallifications then worked with a guy for 12 months as his trainee. then was told im a gas engineer not a trainee. now theres kids just left school doing a 6 months, thats 6 MONTHS crash course get nvq2 at the end and they are gas engineers

So are you advocating we need to start at basement level and assume no knowledge or experience before replying.

May be the forum admin need to start a distance learning and training section and charge for it

I'm glad you can fix faults with common sense and have no need for test equipment it very rarely works for me!!

Basicaly YES UNg back to basics with some of the questions specialy in ther general forum pages as some of the questions being asked only require simple answers as the OP sometimes hasnt got a clue electricaly and I fear reading some day in a paper " guy gets electricuted says he was Following advice given on the internet"

YES I know that the sinario may not happen BUT by the same it MAY happen as there are some realy silly people out there who when trying to save paying for someone tocome do the work required
