Will LED Bulbs have a shorter Lifespan in a Light fitting designed for Halogen

Hi

we are replacing light fittings in our home. Im confident with the fitting aspect, but have run into doubt in making the right choice of fitting.The one we like says it recommends G9 Halogen bulbs

Whatever we buy we would like to use LED bulbs, like it to be flush fitted multi arm light.
I know that LED bulbs with work with all fittings.

Some of our previous fittings led to short lifespans for LED bulbs (Cheap ones, and good brands like Compton, Integral, Philips)
I would like to ensure we avoid this scenario with our new choices.

This website says that Light fittings are designed differently for halogen bulbs and LED bulbs. And putting LED bulbs in the halogen fitting will lead to shorter lifepans.

However, I cant find any other site that mentions this, so i was wondering if its advice i should follow?

I would like some advice.

• Does the choice of light fitting impact lifespan of LED
• If we buy a light fitting which is designed for Halogen, will it impact the lifespan of a G9 LED Bulb
• Any Tips for choosing the correct light fitting would be welcome

I would think there should be no effect on the lifespan of an LED lamp when the fitting is designed for halogen.

the heat that comes off a halogen is much more than LED, and if anything, it is this heat that would damage the fitting rather than damage the lamp itself.

Even fittings designed for halogens will go brittle through the heat… the plastic, or ceramic lampholder casing.


One thing that may cause premature failure of an LED is running it through a dimmer switch when it’s not a dimmable LED, or the older style of dimmer that simply reduced the voltage.
A halogen would just dim with lesser voltage, but an LED, an electronic device expecting a certain range of voltage, may still try to operate and eventually fail.

that makes more sense LEDs do produce less heat.
I think i read somewhere that LEDs are more sensitive to heat, as in their tolerance to heat levels is a lot lower compared to other lamps and that has an impact on lifespan

do the glass bowls over the bulbs increase the heat significantly?
