Hi all,

Today I found myself attempting to wire up an ESI ESRTP4RF Wireless programmable room thermostat to an Ideal Standard combi boiler. I believe it is now wired up correctly as the heating is coming on and off when I have it on manual and raise the room temp. I just need to put myself at ease with what I've done so I need someone to check the diagram below.

Here is a picture from the thermostat's manual:

Here is a picture of the boiler wiring diagram at the moment:

based on the pictures it appears to be very badly installed and not in compliance with the wiring regulations.

also you've broken gas safety laws, cant remove the case / cover to a gas appliance unless your gas safe

as for boiler side easy way to test which one is which one will be live all the time

cables are temporary to get it working. the main confusion was no conductor identification on the boiler room stat/timer terminals. I wasn't sure which of these goes to com, normally open or normally closed.

Room stat terminals on your boiler just "make" and "break" as per diagram A.
So it would make no difference if the room stat wires were reversed.

Some boilers send a 230v volts out through these auxially terminals, some are volt free or a lower voltage.
Your find all wireless room stats give you volt free terminals because it's a universal solution. And links can be put in if needed.

When you say temporary do you mean just wired it up like this while you were working out how it works, or temporary as in your sort it out tommorow ;)

The boiler manufacturer can’t predict which controls you are going to fit and mark their terminals to suit, there are many different thermostats and controls which often have different terminal labelling.
Your thermostat is clearly marked as to the function of each terminal and the boiler manual clearly identifies the type of connection to external controls and how it should be connected.

Could you be a bit more specific as to exactly which clause in which law you are referring to please. Having read through the relevant law a couple of times looking for it I haven’t yet been able to find it.

thanks for the dislike :D

@davesparks

yes no problem https://www.---------------.co.uk/media/1449/who-can-legally-work-on-a-gas-appliance-factsheet.pdf

That doesn’t answer my question, it’s a link to a third party interpretation of the law. What I asked for is a reference to the law.

no it's not...The CPC isn't connected, there is no strain relief and the termination itself leaves a lot to be desired.

That is the law simple as

And not third party either as gas safe are the regulating body

That is not the law, that is a leaflet produced by gassafe, the law can be found on legislation.gov.uk and is titled Gas safety (installation and use) regulations 1998

Gas safe is the body currently licensed to maintain the register on behalf of the health and safety executive,

Yes what does it say, will be some iteration of you must be qualified/ hold the reverent qualifications

Also why do you think boilers come pre wired

Have a read

why do you think boilers come pre wired
They come pre-wired (with a link in the thermostat connections) because they are tested before being dispatched..
Are saying that electricains can't wire boilers up because they are not Gas Safe ?

Of course, I understand you shouldn't be taking the cover off of an Gas appliance but we are not dismantling the boiler, to get to the burner etc we have to remove another cover which I would agree, Non Gas safe people should not be removing.

correct and there not tested eg fired up/ connected to elec

still doesnt matter your removing the cover, which under law you cant do unless your gas safe or its decorative (no screws in cover)

Pretty sure the newish Valiant Boilers have no screws in the cover, just clips at the bottom.

I was on a job and gasman was with gas safe inspector was there, the inspector was fine with me removing the cover to do electrical connections and didn't call the police.

Gas man was still on site and probably hasn't commissioned the boiler yet
